The Silent Hill f Scarecrow puzzle, also known as the rice field puzzle, has different solutions depending on the difficulty. See how to solve the scarecrow puzzle for hard, lost in the fog, and story difficulty here!
List of Contents
In the Hard Puzzle difficulty, all of the Scarecrows that have the Flash Cards will look similar to Rinko. The faceless scarecrows will drop hints of Hinako's thoughts on what she thinks to be Rinko's jealousy towards her.
All four scarecrows will have mostly the same features as Rinko, except for the 5th one, which resembles Hinako in terms of appearance.

"Can you even imagine how I feel? I'll put on my polite smile for now."
The first scarecrow in Hard mode looks a lot like Rinko with a slit mouth depicting a smile, as mentioned in the clue. She will also have a mask behind her head. Remove the thorn to move to the next group.

"Can you even imagine how I feel? What it's like to have been deceived by you for so long?"
The second scarecrow's clue mentions having been deceived. This is connected to the scarecrow with a sickle behind her, as if stabbed behind her back.

"Can you even imagine how I feel? He never once looked at me the way he looked at you. Not once."
In the third group, scarecrows can be seen in pairs looking at each other, except for one. In this pair, the girl scarecrow that looks like Rinko is looking at a male scarecrow, similar to Shu, while he's staring off somewhere else. Get the thorn from the Rinko-like scarecrow.

"Can you even imagine how I feel? You've always been such an eyesore."
The fourth scarecrow looks to be avoiding the scarecrow in front of her. While the other Ayakakashi are facing the ones in front of them, this one breaks the succession and does not look at the one in the center.
This pair of scarecrows looks like Rinko being avoidant with a dejected Hinako looking down on the ground.

"Can you even imagine how I feel? You hurt me, and even hurt him, too. Do you know how it feels to force a smile when I'm staring at that disgusting face of yours?!"
The last scarecrow in Hard mode is a bit more vague, as there are multiple features meant to throw you off. Many scarecrows in the group have sickles stabbing them, which pertains to the 2nd line of the clue. As for the last line, it ties to the only female scarecrow in the group smiling, which is the one facing down and looks a lot like Hinako.
For our speculation, the last clue is less of Rinko's thoughts on Hinako, but rather Hinako's thoughts on herself. She feels hurt and yet forces a smile when seeing herself in her state, which is likely tied to one of the endings.
The Field Puzzle in this difficulty is significantly harder due to the individual characteristics of the correct scarecrows being different from the last. That said, all of the correct scarecrows look like Hinako and her female friends, which narrows down the options per group.
The first scarecrow looks quite similar to Sakuko with her head twisted, while the second one is identical to Rinko with her head facing down.
As for the last three, they have minor differences with their features but still share a resemblance with Hinako. The last one is easy to tell, as it's isolated from the rest of the group. Follow the trail of scarecrows on the ground to locate the fifth and last one.

"It's your funeral today. I think I'll give you a standing ovation."
Look for the scarecrow that looks quite similar to Sakuko with pigtails and her head twisted towards the sky. Her form looks to be giving a weird bow, as if receiving a standing ovation.

"It's your funeral today. Good riddance. It feels as though I finally got this painful burden off my chest."
The second scarecrow looks like Rinko with her head down. The main clue in this puzzle is the last line, a burden removed from her chest. This likely connects to the sickle on the ground by her feet, as if painfully removed from her.

"It's your funeral today. You hurt him, and now you're leaving him behind. I hope you suffer for what you've done."
The third group has a male scarecrow on the ground with a weapon stabbed in him, while the rest of the scarecrows surround him. The one with the thorn has short hair, without a weapon, and is facing away from him, as if running away after attacking him.

"It's your funeral today. You were such a thorn in my side. Always getting between me and him."
In the fourth group, you will notice a Rinko-like scarecrow in front of the clue facing towards a male one that looks like Shu. In between them is a short-haired scarecrow that looks similar to Hinako, which connects to the last line in the clue. Remove the thorn from this scarecrow to move to the last group.

"It's your funeral today. Goodbye, and don't ever show your face again. Go do your own thing, just like you always have."
The last scarecrow is isolated from the rest of the group, as mentioned in the clue. To find her, follow the trail of scarecrows on the ground. She will be beside some wooden fences and some hay. Getting the thorn will end the puzzle.
In the Story Puzzle difficulty, look for the Scarecrows that have the same appearance as Hinako. As most of the other ones will have at least one misleading feature, observe them carefully and select the correct one to avoid awakening those hostile to you.
All of the prompts given by the faceless scarecrow also start with the line, who are you?, which likely pertains to Hinako's conflict with herself.

"Who are you? Why do you always have to be different than everyone else? Freak."
The first scarecrow is the only one with a blade in her hand, which ties to the 2nd line in the clue being different from everyone else.

"Who are you? Honestly, You're helpless without me."
The second scarecrow will be the only one in the group to not have a weapon. This follows the 2nd line of her being helpless.

"Who are you? I'll be your friend. Otherwise, you'd be so miserably alone."
For the third scarecrow, observe the neck ties and pins of the group. Most of them are in pairs in blue, white, and yellow neck ties, wearing matching brooch pins. The only exception is the one with the short hair wearing a red neck tie and a golden bird brooch. Get the third flash card from her.

"Who are you? Tell me, truly. You two aren't anything more than friends, right? I've always been watching you when you weren't looking, you know."
The fourth scarecrow is a bit more interesting, as their positions are a bit more important. You will notice two scarecrows similar to Shu and Hinako looking at each other, while another scarecrow that looks like Rinko is glaring behind them. Get the flash card from Hinako, who is the subject in the clue.

"Who are you? You. Yes, you."
The fifth and last scarecrow is the one who looks most like Hinako with short hair. She has her head tilted down to the ground. Get the flash card to finally escape the rice field.

In the Scarecrow puzzle, you must identify 5 correct scarecrows from five separate groups. The clues collected from the faceless scarecrows lead you to the one that must have its thorn removed. Once removed, you will receive a flash card, and the scarecrow will point to the direction of the next group. Do this until you escape the rice fields.

When you select the wrong scarecrow to take a flash card from, they will immediately use the opportunity to attack you. Observing scarecrows will not trigger this, so we suggest checking them out carefully before getting the flash card.
Do note that staying too long on the field will awaken some of these entities, so you may have to deal with them if you take some time to check which one to get the flash card from.
Ayakakashi Enemy Guide and Info

The Scarecrow Puzzle can be found in the Fields (Fog Town) area of Ebisugaoka, as Hinako briefly gets separated again from Shu. You must collect the Flash Cards from the correct scarecrows to exit the nightmare.

The Sickle weapon will become available for Hinako to use once you reach this level. Get it from the first scarecrow with the white sack on its head, which can already be used against enemies during the puzzle.
