Me (Shimizu Hinako) Journal Entry

Me. There's not a single extraordinary thing about me. Except maybe being tall for a girl my age. I used to be in the Track & Field Club, which is probably why I'm better at sports than most girls. I guess I got used to running around a lot when I was a kid since I preferred playing with boys.

I will admit, I can be quite stubborn at times. I don't like accepting things that other people decide for me, even if it's the right thing to do. More than once, I've rebelled and made the wrong decision, only to regret it later.

Unlike my sister Junko, who was always the golden child, I've been a handful ever since I was little. My parents told me that I never listened to a single word they said. I'd make my mom cry and my dad furious. But Junko was always there for me. She understood me. She looked out for me. That's why I love my sister and have always done what she's asked of me... Or, at least, I've tried. She would smooth things out between me and my parents, which made life in that house a little more bearable. That is, until she got married, of course.

I've always despised people who tell me how to act just because I'm a girl. Shu was different, though. He was the only one who ever understood me. We were perfect partners. I considered him a true companion. As we got older, the pressure from our parents got stronger. Even still, Shu never stopped treating me like his equal, regardless of my gender.

There exist two Hinakos inside me now: Shimizu Hinako, whom I have known since birth; and Hinako, a woman who is trying to steal my body from the old me. It's like an alien is trying to take over me. If this were Space Wars, my partner should be coming to the rescue, but there's no sign of him...

Nothing gets on my nerves more than other people trying to make decisions for me. Even if what they're saying is right, it just rubs me the wrong way. I'd rather make a hundred mistakes on my own than follow someone else's commands. But that can make for a lonely life, one where I refuse to listen to anyone else. I want to become the kind of person who truly listens to what others have to say. Of course, it'll still be up to me whom I listen to. And that will be someone I can trust. Someone who will walk alongside me, hand in hand.

However, making long lists of things I hate is just a way of running away from the real issues I have with my inner self. I have to step up and face what's inside of me. Even if I don't like what I see. Being able to take my time and carefully think things through before making a decision is what's most important to me.

Mom Journal Entry

My mother. If I had to choose one word to describe her, it would be... pitiful. She's the one who bears the brunt of my father's violent moods and malicious abuse. When I was younger, she used to protect me from him, so I didn't hate her back then. But maybe I do hate her now.

Even as my father screams in her face, throws bowls at her, and sends her out for alcohol late at night, she remains ever loyal to him. I just cannot, will not, accept her way of life.

“A woman's happiness begins with marriage.”

She told me that every opportunity she got. Am I supposed to believe that she's actually happy with the life she has now in this house?

Today, my dad threw a knife. It got stuck in the tatami mat. There are chips and dings all over the house. Every last one is from when he threw something.

Is that what happiness is to my mother? Seeing her house in such a sorry state and full of scars?

My mom smiled through tears of joy when Junko got married. Was she really so happy to be sending her daughter off to suffer the same fate as her? Did she raise her just to be beaten and abused by some man?

What even is a “bride price,” anyway? Why do they make a profit off of Junko getting married? Did they get more money because they taught her how to cook and sew? Well, I won't learn those things. You won't make a single yen off of me! I won't be like my mother. Not now, not ever!

Why did my mother even marry him in the first place? How could anyone possibly call themselves happy, having to spend their entire life with someone like him?

Mom once told me, “A husband and wife support each other for the whole of their lives, in sickness and in health.

“You see, it took me a long time to recover after giving birth to you. I caused your father a lot of trouble with my mood swings.

“But no matter how much I complained, he stood by me through it all without so much as a frown.

“I know he may not have turned out to be much of a father to you girls, but all in all, he's been a good enough husband to me.”

Dad Journal Entry

My father. When I first learned of the term “patriarchal husband” and that it meant a man who does nothing but boss his wife around, he was the first person to come to mind. Dad barely talks. He ignores me when I tell him, “Good morning,” but if I say nothing, he gets angry instead. And once he's angry, he just... explodes. He loses all control over his emotions in the blink of an eye. He yells at Mom, throws things around, and even hits us.

Why can't he act like that in public? Why does everyone else only get to see his quiet, calm side? If it meant that I wouldn't have to spend another second with him in that house, I'd happily let myself be taken away.

I've heard that Dad used to be a fisherman when he was younger and would go on long fishing trips way out at sea. He managed to save up enough money doing that to open up a restaurant, a place where he could put his skills with a knife to use. It didn't work out, though. Not only did he lose all his savings, he took on new debt too.

Now, he spends his days drinking his life away in this sleepy little town that's a long way from the sea. He never even tries to cook anything anymore. It's only when he complains about Mom's food that he pretends to be some kind of important chef.

I used to think it was just my dad who was like this, but after listening to all the married women around here complain, every man seems just as bad. All their husbands are just as short- tempered, just as violent, just as useless, and do just as little to help out their wives. After learning this, every grumpy- looking old man in town I see reminds me of him.

When I think that I was born and raised just to support these horrible tyrants... I lose all hope. If everything works out, they're going to give my father a lot of money. I'm sure he's desperate to use it to pay back his debts.

...My father is selling me to pay back his debts.

After Dad saved up enough money from fishing, he decided to start up a restaurant with his long-time friend -someone who was like a little brother to him. That “friend,” however, stabbed him in the back and ran off with all his money, leaving him with nothing but debt. Apparently, that's when things really started heading south for my dad. I mean, I do sympathize with him... But his past is his problem, not mine. And it definitely doesn't excuse him for making every day a living hell for me. When it's just him and my mom, he apologizes for the life of poverty he's forced us into due to his debts.

According to Mom, there is nothing more shameful in this world to a father than letting his daughter see his weak side. If he acts the way he does to me just to hide something as dumb as that, then I think I might just go crazy right now. This house is theirs. It has nothing to do with me. I was just born here. I may be Hinako, the little bird, but I have wings of my own. And if he doesn't care about how I want to live my life, then I'll just spread my wings and fly away. Wherever I choose to go will be entirely up to me.

Junko Journal Entry

My older sister. She's one of the prettiest and kindest people I know, and there's nothing she can't do. I can rely on her for anything. Honestly, she's the greatest sister anyone could ask for. She's always been there for me, ever since the day I was born, until... Until she left to get married.

Junko always told me that the quickest way to happiness is to live the way society expects women to. Well, if there's a quick way to happiness, then there must be other ways, too. One time, when I was little, Junko showed me how to find my way out of a maze in a puzzle book. There's no doubt that she showed me the quickest solution. Still, what I felt that moment was nothing compared to the joy of figuring it out for myself.

I once went to see Junko in the hospital when she was pregnant. Her morning sickness was so bad that all she could manage between vomiting was groaning. Her hands were rough and chapped, and her face looked as though she had aged decades overnight. When I saw her like that, it was as if the sister that I adored had disappeared. This is what marriage does to a woman. It makes you end up like Junko, like Mom...

Junko says that she is happy, but I just don't get it. Neither she nor my mom ever look happy. Then again, when I tell her about my ideas of happiness, she just says that those don't sound very happy to her at all. What matters most to my sister are results. What matters most to me is choice.

Even if it's what makes my sister happy, if I can't make my own choices, then I will be unhappy forever. But if what makes me happy doesn't give my sister the results she wants, then she will be unhappy. Though our concepts of happiness may differ, I think as sisters, we can respect each other's version of it and take comfort when we know the other has found it.

Sakuko Journal Entry

One of my friends. She's always got her head up in the clouds and is a little strange. She's constantly trying to worm her way out of paying me back for the five hundred yen I lent her that one time. Her father is the head priest of the Sennensugi Shrine in town. She seems to take great pride in donning the traditional miko robes and selling charms during the New Year celebrations.

Sakuko is very in touch with her spiritual side. She seems to always have some god or apparition visiting her dreams, telling her about this or that.

According to Sakuko, there's been quite the supernatural disturbance around Ebisugaoka. Something about an ancient god who's furious about having their followers stolen from them, and now they're out for revenge or whatnot.

I think Sakuko may have read one too many of those bizarre comics. Lately, she'll be laughing all happily one moment, then turn deadly serious and spout off some weird nonsense the next.

Apparently, she's acting like that because she thinks it's cool, but it kind of creeped me out the first few times she did it. I hope she gets over this weird “supernatural” phase of hers.

Shu Journal Entry

Shu's been my best friend since forever; he's my partner. We've been having play dates for as long as I can remember. When we played make- believe Space Wars, we'd call each other partner, and for some reason, it just kind of stuck. Kids of the Showa era tend to look down on the other sex, but never Shu. When I rebelled against my parents because they told me to act like a girl, he was the one who understood my feelings the most anda stood by me.

Shu's always had a vast knowledge of plants and flowers, so his nickname came to be Professor Horticulture. He has so many aspirations for his future. He wants to be a gardener, herbalist, matsutake farmer, and a member of the Space Army. Shu comes from a long line of pharmacists, with his grandmother still working as one. Following the war, a town doctor was finally able to open an actual practice. Before that, the Iwais were said to have been stand-in doctors.

As Shu was a grandma's boy, he spent a lot of time learning about various types of plants, flowers, and medicinal herbs. That seemed to have sparked his interest in medicine, which eventually led to him learning first aid. It seems that he was interested in learning first aid because of his family lineage as pharmacists, and to fulfill his duty of being a member of the Space Army.

Shu's knowledge of medicine rivals that of a veteran pharmacist. From ingredients, efficacy, to the medicine that best matches your body-you name it, and he'll be able to tell you. You can consult him with all those pains that come with growing up, like headaches to acne, and just like that! He'll recommend you medicine and also give you advice on daily lifestyle choices. Rumor got around that listening to Shu's advice really does make acne go away, and now he's really popular with the girls. I suffer from frequent headaches, so Shu gets me medicine based on my symptoms, and it really helps out.

We've always had this unspoken rule that we shouldn't view each other as boys and girls, so we've always called each other partner growing up. But with time, our bodies slowly developed into that which we rejected. If I start viewing Shu as the man he's growing into, I feel like our precious relationship will come to an end. And the thought of losing him absolutely petrifies me. Shu is probably also starting to have the same thoughts as me, but he still treats me as his partner.

I swear that I want to stay by Shu's side as his partner, and not in a romantic way either. But at the same time, there's some strange part of me that wants him to acknowledge me as a girl....

Rinko Journal Entry

One of my friends. She's really put-together, but can be a little inflexible in how she does things sometimes. Once she's set her mind to something, that's it. And recently, that something seems to be clothes, fashion, and other “womanly pursuits.” Rinko once confessed to me that she had a crush on Shu. I told her that I was all for it, but if she can't get used to the idea of rolling around in the dirt and catching insects for fun, she might have a tough time.

Rinko is earnest and works really hard, but she also tends to get a little too caught up in her own ways of seeing things.

Once she's come to a conclusion in her head, it can be like pulling teeth to convince her otherwise.

Although we're the best of friends now, we've had two or three huge fights in the past that ended with us not speaking to each other for weeks and weeks.

I'm sure we'll end up fighting again in the future. But even if we do, I know we'll be able to make up again.

Rinko is always asking whether Shu and I are an item. I tell her every time that we're not, but she never seems to buy it. I heard a rumor that Rinko was gossiping about me behind my back. I suppose love can tear apart even the closest of friends. I don't know what to do...

He promised me everything I could ever want to be content. A life full of comfort for as long as I live. Status that no one could look down on. And most importantly, endless love for me. I can tell that his love for me is real. The desire to reciprocate his feelings dominates half of me. Even now, the two “me's” continue their petty war, each attempting to kill the other for control over my body. I cannot guarantee what you want me to be. Would you still be wiiling to wait for me, Kotoyuki?

Ebisugaoka Journal Entry

I live in the small, rural town of Ebisugaoka. Before the war, the town was lively due to an influx of people coming for the coal miners and dam construction going on in the northern mountains. After the dam construction finished and the coal mine closed down, it just became a sad little town. The grand iron bridge that connects the town to the nearby city is the only reminder of this sorry town's former glory.

It's said that the kanju for “Ebisu” in “Ebisugaoka” holds the meaning of a person who migrated from far away. The most fanciful theory for the origin of this town is that it was once a hidden village for Taira clan soldiers who lost the Genpei War. In the town's old customs, there are a few rules that seem like part of a secret village's code—including things like not owning dogs or washing things in the river—but whether or not it's the truth remains a mystery.

According to another legend, once upon a time, a water dragon that resided here spewed poison so people would not approach. Then Inari-sama subdued the dragon and made land hospitable again.

The area also has a surprising number of onsen. There is research suggesting that the tale of the water dragon could in fact be referring to an incident where onsen water containing noxious gas spouted out of the ground like a geyser. I feel like this theory is the most likely.

From the findings of a recent town hall investigation, it was observed that the mountains to the north and south of Ebisugaoka have a very brittle surface. The town hall declared that a landslide could occur at any given time, but the residents argued back, saying that in the last several hundred years, there has been no record of such a disaster.

Sakuko says that the divine protection of Inari-sama is actually what's protecting Ebisugaoka. I also remember her telling me with a straight face that when the residents no longer believe in Inari-sama, Ebisugaoka will return once again to an uninhabitable land.

Inari-sama Journal Entry

Ebisugaoka is mostly composed of Inari-sama's believers. Ther are statues of Inari-sam all over town. My elderly neighbors treat them with great respect and worship them. Inari-sama, also referred to as Oinari-sama, is a goddess that puts old, unusable tools torest. They are known for their offerings preference of abura-age tofu pierced through with an old needle. It seems like other towns don't have these customs, though. I'm guessing they might be something special only we do Inari-sama here in Ebisugaoka.

Inari-sama's statues act as memorials for old or broken tools. It's okay to take these tools for your own as long as you have a use for them. This is called “kishu”, and it's an action that's considered virtuous. It's a teaching of Inari-sama to make the most out of tools in any way.

The Inari-sama of Ebisugaoka has been the guardian deity that has protected this town since the old days, but they can be capricious at times. Sometimes, they'll turn into a fox and steal chickens and dried persimmons; other times, they'll play tricks on children who don't listen to their parents. I also hear that when they fall in love with a woman they find desirable at first sight, they spirit he away to be their bride.

Generally speaking, “Inari-sama” refers to the goddess of agriculture, Ukanomitama. The fox was the goddess's messenger, but over their worship became intertwined. Nowadays, if anyone mentions Inari-sama, they'll think of the fox as well. Sakuko says that this is just the fox taking the goddess of agriculture's position for itself. She also says that the goddess and the fox are having a supernatural fight on top of the Inari statues. That wild imagination of hers never fails to make me laugh.

Chizuruya (General Store) Journal Entry

It might have started as a general store, but we've come to call it the “candy store” because half of what it sells is just snacks and toys. It's where all the kids hang out. My friends and I also meet up here, though we usually just sit outside and chat.

Shu and I decided that this place was the Space Army HQ when we played Space Wars. When it wasn't just us playing, we would gather here to have mission briefings while eating candy.

Doll (Celluloid Doll) Journal Entry

It looks like a doll that I had when I was young. I don't have mine anymore, but there was a time when it felt like a friend to me. In my opinion, a doll is a toy for girls. Because of this, I always felt like my doll was telling me that I should act more like a girl when I was playing with it...

One day, I as told by a girl that I couldn't play house with the other girls because I also hung out with the boys. From that day on, I didn't want to play with the girls anymore. And so, I threw the doll away... I knew it. This doll looks exactly like the one that I thought I had gotten rid of that day. I'm sure taht it hates me for throwing it away and abandoning it. When all of this is over, I'll ask my mom for a way to put it to rest...

Who is the Doll?

Hotei-sama (Agura no Hotei-sama) Journal Entry

A clear, medical infusion with a deep red color. This natural remedy is used to alleviate and offer you pain relief and can either be ingested or applied to the affected area. It is known in Ebisugaoka as “Agura no Hotei-sama,”or “Hotei-sama's Cure,” and is still favored by a small minority of the town's elderly population who has a distate for modern medicine.

In ancient times when people believed fevers were the result of demonic posession, this infusion was considered a miracle cure that was capable of dispelling evil spirits. Though the original formulation has been lost to time, historical documents indicate that it took an extraordinary amount of time and effort to prepare.

Space Wars (Great Space Invasion) Journal Entry

This is a game that Shu and I played together when we were kids. Basically, aliens, known as the Galactic Imperium, would arrive in UFOs in droves, and we would fight them to protect the town. Playmates would come and go (we called them new recruits and fallen ones, respectiely), and in the end, Shu and I were the only ones left standing to combat the Galactic Imperium.

Space Wars wasn't just about fighting evil with their laser guns, though. We'd pretend to analyze the enemy by drawing alien sketches. During P.E., we'd say that the class was a training camp for the Space Army. I think we played with dolls too... Right, I think that's when we were training in first aid in order to assist the injured.

Not to brag, but we've taken down the enemy's mothership, the giant UFO, on many occasions. However, each time that happened, the Galactic Imperium would deploy more and more troops from their home planet. As we grew older, we were able to have a better understanding of heroes by watching television, and I think we came up with some elaborate backstories for the enemy leaders. By this time, it was a world that only Shu and I knew.

There've been times when I wished from the bottom of my heart that Space Wars would continue forever. But as we grew older, the Galactic Imperium stopped sending in new forces. We're still proud members of the Space Army and will always be on standby to defend the Earth. We still call each other “partner” like the old times. Even if our classmates laugh and say that it's lame, our Space Wars have yet to come to an end...

Shu watched this movie when he was young and came up with the Space Wars game we used to play. I watched it back then too because my dad dragged me to see it. I don't have any memories of that time, but according to my dad, it scared me so much that I couldn't stop crying for days.

Since this was the inspiration of Space Wars, I was thinking that it'd be an exciting story. Apparently, that only applies to the last scene, with the rest of it just being a sci-fi horror movie. Shu didn't like that when he was younger, and so it was his dream to fight back with his very own Space Army. That's one of the things I like about Shu. He doesn't let reality hold him back.

UFO Ending and How to Get It

Sennensugi Shrine Journal Entry

A lonely little shrine situated on the outskirts of town. The name Sennensugi Shrine sure sounds fancy, but that's all that it has going for it. Even though Ebisugaoka is full of elderly believers, this shrine rarely gets any visitors. They instead go to what's closest to them—and that's an Inari statue. Sakuko's family serves the shrine, including fulfilling the role of head priest. Sakuko is quite proud of this fact, but I don't know if the same could be said about her parents.

I remember what Sakuko once said. Sennensugi Shrine didn't use to be the small shrine that we know—the real shrine was situated on the mountain, and it was much more impressive than it is now. Long ago, there was an actual thousand-year cedar that was worshipped as a divine vessel. Unfortunately, it was struck by lightning and burned to ash. Upon losing its divine vessel, the shrine was abandoned and became the small shrine it is present day.

Sakuko says that the custom of old tools to rest is called the Tsukumogami faith. During the course of history, if somehow fused with the Inari faith, making it a special religious view of Ebisugaoka. The only shrine in town. Sennensugi Shrine was, as its name suggests, worshipping a thousand-year cedar as its divine tree. After living to see a thousand years, it was praised as divine.

And then, once the divine tree turned to ash, it was time to worship the next oldest thing. Sakuko reckons that it just so happened to be the moss-covered Inari statue.

The believers' world and the gods' real are not impervious to change. No matter how revered a god may be, their believers can choose to worship another god, or the religion could prove impossible to preserve in its original form. The Tsukumogami faith, where one would worship old things, shifted over to Inari faith once the object of worship changed to the moss-covered Inari statues.

I'm sure that the mix of the Inari faith and the Tsukumogami faith is only one of man cases. And once a hundred years pass... who knows? The tanuki statues of Shigaraki could be the next object of worship.

Getting Lost (Memories of Getting Lost) Journal Entry

There was this one time where I played hide-and-seek with a bunch of my friends when I was young. I got so excited and ran far away because I didn't want anyone to find me, and eventually get lost around here. I was sobbing and hollering and walked the wrong way for house— actually, I was told later that it was the exact opposite direction of my house. Even a town as small as this felt huge for me me as a kid. I realized that I know nothing about the town. Even these fields seemed to spread out endlessly into the horizon.

I walk this path every time I go to Rinko's, but to be honest, to this day I'm still scard that I might get lost. I mean I've been told that I should probably just ask an adult for directions if I get lost... But then I remember that one time when I walked on the footath of the rice fields for fun and got smacked by an old farmer all of a sudden. The trauma from that experience made me scared of adults. Back then, and even to this day.

Middle School (Ebisugaoka Middle School) Journal Entry

This is the middle school that I atteneded. It was built when the town was financially well-off during the dam construction, so the beautiful facilities are at odds with the rest of the dull buildings in town. I think I met Rinko during my first year here. I remember here surprise when she heard that I called Shu “partner”.

Ebisugaoka used to be a lively town with an ample labor force for construction and coal mining when this school was built. The town was always bustling, and the school was full of students. The students of our time now study so that we can leave to go to a bigger town when we're adults.

A world that's not a playground like elementary school, but not as mature as high school. Middle school to me was like the stage between a tadpole and a frog-I guess you could say it's a period of grotesque transformations. Up until elementary school, Shu and I would have water fights and we wouldn't mind if our underwear showed. Once we were entered middle school, though, while we might not have paid any mind to things like that, others around us did. It just felt like our world changed in a snap. Boys and girls used to think of one another as mortal enemies, always bickering and fighting each other. But now... It suddenly turned into such a weird dynamic where we have to treat each other in a completely different way. It's fine for people who want to do that because the people around them are doing the same. But for someone like me, who really couldn't care less about what people think, that's not the case...

Lantern (Evil-Warding Lantern) Journal Entry

A type of revolving lantern that has a long history in Ebisugaoka. The picture silhouette rotates inside the lantern due to the air current that the candle makes. Normally, revolving lanterns are for entertainement, but the ones in Ebisugaoka were specifically used to ward off evil. In Ebisugaoka, there is a custom where women in unlucky ages hang it on their front door during Obon.

How to Get Lantern

Origami (Origami of Grievances) Journal Entry

There's a custom that's said to get rid of your worries like magic. You write grievances that you can't tell anyone on a piece of paper, fold it into an origami fox, and then throw it somewhere that no one else will find it. If you happen to come across someone else's origami of grievances, you can put it to rest by reading it. No matter what's written on it, you have to keep the information to yourself and not tell a single soul.

It's a tradition that's been in this town for ages, but it was particularly popular with middle schoolers. Some kids would indirectly bully others by writing gossip about the people they hated and making sure to put it in a place they would see it. I personally don't like to write bad things about people—or read them for that matter. They say that you can put those complaints to rest by reading them, so I make the effort to read them out. But to be honest, I'd rather not pick them up when I see them.

I remember Rinko folding up origami all thet ime. I don't know what was on them, but I saw her writing down things during class and folding paper into foxes on multiple occasions. She keeps writing her complains on pieces of paper, but instead of burning them, she just decides to throw them in the void and let them accumulate. I think that maybe one day, all of those grievances will pile up and suffocate her...

Sakuko says that if you put something as abstract as your feelings into words, even as a complaint, that will be enough to put your heart to rest. When you're feeling down, it's like having clothes scattered around in your room. And when you write it into words, it's like you're folding them into nice and neat piles. It's basically like organizing your feelings and folding them away to put them to rest with Inari-sama. This is apparently the real magic behind the origami of grievances.

Forgotten Shrine Journal Entry

I heard once that there was a shrine in shambles near Shu's house, but I never knew it was here. Shu told me back then that there's treasure at the roots of the divine tree or something... Sakuko once told me that this place is where the real Sennensugi Shrine is.

Sakuko's dream is to restore this shrine to its former glory. But would such a thing even be possible? I can't really imagine the town's elderly residents climbing all the way up here... People here used to worship the thousand-year cedar. Now, they pray to the Inari statues. I'm starting to think that rather than just some revered god, maybe we humans hold more power because we choose which god to worship...

Park (Park of Memories) Journal Entry

I think this is the part I used to play at a lot when I was little. I feel like all my memories of fun times and hard times took place here. Playing house with girls, and playing dodgeball with boys... But kids will tell you that it's weird for girls to play with boys.

They told me they wouldn't let me play because I hung out with the boys. I remember that moment of rejection and denial crystal clear in my head. Why do Showa kids try so hard to keey boys and girls so clearly separated? Is it truly such an awful thing to be a part of both groups?
