Tool Kits, which you can find just by progressing the story and exploring an area, can be used to repair the durability of your weapons. These Tool Kits can be used anytime as long as you have them through the quick menu.
It's still recommended that you try to avoid engaging in combat as much as possible, as getting Tool Kits is quite rare in this game.
Weapons that you often use in the Dark Shrine do not have any durability on them and do not need to be repaired, unlike normal weapons. This means you can keep hitting enemies as much as you want without running the risk of it breaking.
However, despite how durable these weapons are, the caveat here is that they're only usable in the Dark Shrine and can't be used anywhere else.

To perform a light attack with a weapon, press the R1 button. These are typically fast swinging strikes that don't do a lot of damage but let you recover faster.

R2 is the button used to perform your Heavy Attack. It's slow, but if you manage to land a hit, it will deal a lot of damage and has a chance to stun the enemies. When an enemy is stunned, you deal more damage to it.
For heavy weapons, you can charge your attack to deal more damage the longer you hold it.

Hold L2 to charge your Focus. Once it's fully charged, unleash a devastating attack by pressing the R1 button to perform a Focus Attack. Be warned, as when you're charging your Focus gauge, your sanity meter will go down, and your max sanity will decrease if you get hit.
For Heavy Weapons, doing Focus will put you in a Defensive Stance instead. During this state, you will be able to block most attacks, but at the cost of your weapon's durability.
