Head up the stairs to the Middle School, where a cutscene shows the gates to the mountain locked. Shu suggests the key might be hidden somewhere inside the school, prompting the group to enter. However, Rinko expressed feeling tired and stays behind with Shu, leaving Hinako to search for the key on her own.

For New Game+ playthroughs, close to the entrance of the school is the offering for the third Jizo Statue. The Broken Japanese Geta Sandal can be found in the bridge repair site east of the middle school.

In order to explore the school, you'll have to solve the stairwell puzzle by locating the second floor key and gain access to the upper floor. This method has key differences depending on your Puzzle Difficulty.
For the Story difficulty, you must retrieve a hairpin from the shed outside in the school courtyard to unlock the drawer containing the key. As for the Hard and Lost in the Fog difficulties, the key can be found in the courtyard itself amidst flowers, hinted at by the clues regarding the Vice Principal's hobbies inside the school.

While exploring the school garden, you can pick up a Sledgehammer on top of a bench located next to a small shed on the western side of the area. This is a significant upgrade to the Steel Pipe as it deals slow yet powerful attacks, which will be helpful in later encounters as you explore the school and mountains.

Pick up the Unopened Envelope on the second-row desk, which will serve as the clue for unlocking the Secret Box beside it. To solve the puzzle, uncover all panels and match the symbols to the items mentioned in the letters three times.
You can check your journal at any point to review the clues; they remain the same across all difficulties, with the only difference being that the key phrase is highlighted in red on Story mode. Solving the puzzle rewards you with the Second Floor Classroom Generic Key and plays a cutscene after attempting to leave the room.

Open the door to classroom 3-2 using the generic key, just across the hall from the classroom you left. Examine the book on the teacher's desk to get the Old Annex Main Gate Key and the clue to solving the locker puzzle on the first floor.
Exit classroom 3-2, and open the door to the next to it on the left. You can find the Origami of Grievances at the back of the room, which is another clue needed for the locker puzzle. Exit the second floor by going past the Ayakakashi at the end of the hall, and opening the door behind it.

After picking up the Locker Room Key from the Old Annex, Head down to the locker room and use the correct code to unlock Asakura Ayumi's locker. Found inside will be the Key Cabinet Key which is used to open the key cabinet located inside the office at the side of the shoe lockers.
The three other lockers in the room are optional and can be unlocked using the same codes for all difficulties. They contain useful items such as the Wolf Omamori and a School Bag which increases your inventory capacity by one.

Exit the locker rooms and make your way to the office beside the shoe lockers near the school entrance. Hostile Ayakakashi will be roaming the halls, so stay alert and avoid unnecessary fights, as their numbers can quickly overwhelm you. Once inside the side office, unlock the Key Cabinet to obtain the Key to the Back Mountains.

The Rabbit Omamori can be obtained in during New Game Plus. Exit the school from the eastern window on the first floor, then head west. Enter the classroom through the window to find a box containing the Diary of Revenge and the Rabbit Omamori.

Leave the office and make your way back to the classroom where Shu and Rinko are waiting. A cutscene plays as you enter, showing Rinko nestled a little too close to Shu, who awkwardly pulls away the moment Hinako steps inside.
After handing over the Mountain Gate Key, Rinko insists that Hinako take a moment to rest. Though hesitant, Hinako finally gives in, her weary body sinking into the classroom’s uneasy silence. Upon waking up, she finds herself once more in the suffocating gloom of the Dark Shrine’s Worship Hall.

The school’s courtyard will be crawling with threats, including the Kashimashi, Ara-Abare, and the Vomiting Monster, where most of the stairwell puzzle items are located. Direct confrontation is risky, so focus on dodging through their attacks as you navigate the area.
Meanwhile, the Ayakakashi will initially appear docile inside the school, but grow increasingly hostile as you get closer to obtaining the mountain gate key.
