Items, furniture, and fixtures that can be investigated with the X button such as drawers and vases can contain money. You can also find hearts through this method.
Safes, plants, and ther objects that can be opened with light may contain money or hearts, so make sure to use your Strobulb on anything that looks suspicious.
If you find a picture of a coin hanging on the wall, you can use your Dark-Light device on it. Teasure will likely star pouring out of the frame, though it may also produce only a lone coin occasionally.
Dark-Light Device Upgrades and How to Unlock
Vacuum up any loose wallpaper, rope, dirt, and other suspicious-looking interactive objects for a chance to find some money. You can also use the Poltergust to blow air instead of vacuuming it in, which is another way to interact with objects and possibly reveal some hidden money.
Poltergust 5000 Upgrades and How to Unlock
Bonus challenges can be undertaken by entering a shaking doorway, which will transport Luigi into a special bonus area. You can usually get a large amount of treasure or valuable items such as gems upon successfully completing these challenges.
These bonus challenges are not available in all missions, so it's best to take advantage of them in the select few missions you can find them in. Most of these bonus challenges can be found in the Old Clockworks and Secret Mine areas.
All Secret Door Locations and Rewards
You can get some money by vacuuming up ghosts with a Power Surge after filling the Power Gauge. The amount of gold you get depends on the level of your Power Gauge that you used to capture the ghost. If you defeat the ghost without pulling it in using the Power Gauge, you won't get any money.
Catching multiple ghosts at once also rewards you with some gold bars.
Power Gauge Level | Treasure |
---|---|
1 | 3 Coins |
2 | 1 Gold Bar |
3 | 3 Gold Bars |
This table applies to most ghosts you can normally find in the mansions. However, the Gold Greenie allows you to get more money compared to other ghost variants.
Gold enemies drop more valuable treasure when defeated. Gold non-ghost enemies will often leave behind a gold bar once defeated. Gold Greenies, on the other hand, leave several different kinds of treasure, in addition to any gold you may get from a successful Power Surge.
A Gold Bone can be found hidden in each mission after you obtain a certain amount of money. Gold Bones automatically revive Luigi if he loses all his health. However, if it remains unused in the mission you found it in, it will be added to your treasure count and converted into 200G.
The primary use of collecting money is to unlock upgrades for your Poltergust. Upon hitting certain thresholds, you can upgrade your Power Gauge, Dark-Light Device, and even the Poltergust as a whole.
All the money you get during a mission is added up and forms your treasure for the mission. Collecting lots of treasure during a mission is necessary to get a 3-star rank.
Ranking System Explained: How to Get 3-Stars
Each gold coin, gold bar, and paper bill you collect are all part of your collective treasure, which are deposited into Professor E. Gadd's vault at the end of every mission.
You can view how much treasure you have and your next Poltergust upgrade goal by visiting the vault.
Treasure | Amount in G |
---|---|
Gold Coin | 1 |
Paper Money | 5 |
Gold Bar | 20 |
Gold Bone | 200 (only if unused) |
A Gold Bone you may pick up during the mission is only added to your total treasure value at the end of the mission, when computing your results. If the Gold Bone gets used up during the mission to revive Luigi, it will not count to your total treasure obtained for the mission.
