Confront the Source of the Powerful Energy

As soon as you regain control of Luigi, inspect the objects in the Lobby for treasure. Other areas in the mansion will be unavailable for the duration of the mission. Attempting to go elsewhere in the mansion will result in a call from E. Gadd. When you're ready ride the elevator to the Cellar.

Once inside the Cellar, use the Dark-Light Device on the painting to get some treasure. Before going on ahead down the hall, check the chest underneath the stairs.

Afterwards carefully run past the suits of armor avoiding their swings — one of them swings a flaming torch! Use the Poltergust on the webbed bundle to trigger the cutscene leading to the boss fight.

Defeat the Spider and capture the Grouchy Possessor to obtain a fragment of the Dark Moon and complete the mission.

Phase 1

Flash the Spider with the Strobulb

As soon as the Spider rears up and shows it green eyes, use your Strobulb to stun it. Afterwards, use your Poltergust to suck up the webbed bundle.

Set Fire to the Webs

Take it to the suit of armor with a flaming torch while avoiding the Toxic Blob. Once the torch lits the webbed bundle, the Grouchy Possessor will emerge from the Spider Queen.

Capture the first layer of the Grouchy Possessor

Dodge the Grouchy Possessor's charge, afterwards it will be vulnerable. Flash it with the Strobulb, then start pulling on it with the Poltergust. You'll have to fully charge your A-Pull to catch the first layer of the Grouchy Possessor. When the Grouchy Possessor takes control of the spider again, get close to the wall to avoid the Spider's charge. After charging, the second phase of the boss fight starts.

Phase 2

Free the Suit of Armor with the Spear

When Phase 2 begins, use the Poltergust to blow the rotor on the chandelier causing the webbed bundle to catch on fire and free a suit of armor from the webbing — this suit of armor will thrust with its spear so be careful when approaching it afterwards! Do this all while avoiding the smaller spiders and the toxic blob attacks.

Get the Webbed Bundle to the Suit of Armor with the Spear

Afterwards, approach the giant spider and redo the same tactic in phase 1. Flash the eyes with the Strobulb, suction the webbed bundle and get it to the suit of armor you freed earlier. This will cause the armor to thrust into the webbed bundle securing it in place.

Set Fire to the Webbed Bundle

The next step is to blow on the chandelier again to have the hanging webbed bundle catch on fire and hit the suit of armor with the webbed bundle connected to the giant Spider. This will cause a chain reaction, stunning the Spider Queen and ejecting the Grouchy Possessor.

Capture the Second Layer of the Grouchy Possessor

Dodge its initial charge attack, flash it with the Strobulb and latch onto it with the Poltergust while fully charging your A-Pull capture another layer. When the Grouchy Possessor takes control of the spider again, get close to the wall to avoid the Spider's charge. After charging, the final phase of the boss fight starts.

Phase 3

Free the Last Suit of Armor

The final phase of the boss fight plays out the same as the earlier phases, with one minor difference — the distance of the Spider from the suit of armor with the torch is greater. Get the ball of web near the Spider, and take it to the torch at the end of the hall.

Avoid the Collapsing Pillars

Once the ball of web is lit, make your way back to the webbed armor near the Spider. You have to quickly make it to the suit of armor before the flame goes out, otherwise you'll have to take it back to the end of the hall. On your way back to the Spider, some pillars will collapse, evade them and free the last suit of armor.

Flash the Spider One Last Time

Once the suit of armor is free, you'll notice that it also swings a flaming torch! Flash the Spider again with the Strobulb, and get the webbed bundle to the flaming torch like before. This will cause the webs to be set on fire, and eject the Grouchy Possessor one last time.

Capture the Grouchy Possessor

Much like the earlier phases, dodge its initial charge attack to dissipate the shield. Flash it with the Strobulb when it is vulnerable, then latch onto it with the Poltergust while fully charging your A-Pull. Once the ghost is capture, a fragment of the Dark Moon will drop. Get the Dark Moon Fragment to end the mission.
