With the Iceborne expansion, the Arch-Tempered monsters from the base game offers little to no threat anymore. Below, we will provide an example of an iceborne setup with some of the necessary skills to easily take down the Daora.
Evasive Weapons | Daora's attacks will destroy you if you get hit. Using weapons with several mobility skills like the Longsword, SnS, and Dual Blades can allow you to dodge these attacks and even dodge Nergigante's roar. |
---|---|
Weapon with Shields | Tank weapons prove fairly effective against Nergigante. Unlike other Elder Dragons, Nergigante doesn't have much gimicks. A weapon that can turtle and poke Nergigante will slowly but surely take it down. |
Dragon weapons with Elderseal | Elderseal is particularly effective against Nergigante when soloing him. Bring a weapon with high Elderseal to prevent it from reaching its black form too often. |

A standard lategame gunlance build with guard 5 to protect yourself form Nergigante's attacks. It doesn' come with partbreaker as partbreaker doesn't work against Nergigante's thorns. The rest of your skills have been slotted with damage boosting effects since affinity doesn't work on shelling. |
Temporal Mantle | Improves your survivability against Nergigante. |
---|---|
Rocksteady Mantle | The rocksteady Mantle's increased defense can prevent AT Nergigante's lethal attacks from one shotting you. It also allows you to ignore its roars which can leave you unable to move for a long duration. |
Max Potion | Instant full healing. |
---|---|
Ancient Potion | More instant full healing. |
Mega Demondrug/Armorskin |
Felyne Nergigante hammer Alpha + | You can equip your palico with a weapon that has high elder seal. This can remove the Daora's wind barrier. |
---|---|
Vigorwasp Spray | Nergigante's damage is so high that even hunters with MR gears will take severe damage from its divebomb. Bring your Palico with Vigorwasp to avoid untimely deaths. |
Meowlotov Cocktail | More damage. If your palico is equipped with a weapon with status attributes/elder seal, the meowlotov cocktail will also be able to use these properties. Having Elderseal can delay Nergigante's blackening so try to use Elderseal for your palico together with meolotov for more effect. |
Felyne Safeguard | Additional lives (carts) is always welcome. |
・It is better not to use Flash Pods during Dive Bombs
・Earplugs and Quick Sheath are recommended to counter Dive Bombs
Since Arch-Tempered Nergigante is an ancient dragon, he cannot be affected by any of your traps. The only time you can attack Arch-Tempered Nergigante freely is by downing him after dealing huge amount of damage.
Using Flash Pods will work against Arch-Tempered Nergigante, but it could be a waste since you will not be able to know if you are the one he is targeting. It is better if you use Bright Pods or Dragon Pods instead to save your items.
Since Arch-Tempered Nergigante will always roar before executing the Dive Bomb, you should equip the skill Earplugs along with the skill Quick Sheath to increase your chances of moving away from the Dive Bomb.
Arch-Tempered Nergigante's Dive Bomb can instantly cart you regardless of your health at lower ranks. This attack can be extremely dangerous since it covers a wide area dealing massive damage to anyone nearby. It is highly recommended that you focus on dodging this attack to avoid carting. Keep in mind that Arch-Tempered Nergigante will only use this attack if the spikes on his body are all black.
Maxing your Earplugs to level 5 and Quick Sheath to level 3 can be crucial for this hunt to help you move around faster when he is attacking.
You can cancel the Dive Bomb by using a Flash Pod; however, since the black spikes will remain on his body, he will be completely invulnerable to most of your attacks even after downing him. It is better if you allow him to finish his Dive Bomb to remove the remaining spikes.
White Spikes | Black Spikes |
---|---|
New white spikes are soft and can be easily dealt with. You should focus on attacking these spikes to break them immediately since if they are left unattended, they will eventually turn black which is a lot tougher and can bounce off your melee attacks.
Using the skill Part Breaker will have no effect on destroying the spikes around Arch-Tempered Nergigante's body.
Most of Nergigate's attacks hit in the front, you should always position yourself on his sides to completely avoid his most damaging attacks. Also, it is easier to tell if he is about to attack the sides with the tackle if he closes his wings and slightly crouches.
Arch-Tempered Nergigante will sometimes do a series of attacks that can only hit you if you stand up immediately. You should wait for Arch-Tempered Nergigante to finish his attack before trying to engage again to avoid further damage.
Once you have dealt enough damage to Arch-Tempered Nergigante, he will eventually change his patterns and his attacks will be even more powerful. Be more cautious and do not play aggressively even when Arch-Tempered Nergigante is getting weaker.
Also, it is recommended that you and your party use Large Barrel Bombs when waking up Arch-Tempered Nergigante during his rest to maximize the damage before he performs the Dive Bomb.
Arch-Tempered Nergigante is extremely dangerous when he is enraged. This is the best time to apply status ailments from your items like poison, paralysis and sleep for maximum efficiency.
