Countermeasures against Rathian

Recommended Weapon Element and Armor Skills

Recommended Weapon Element
Dragon Weapon	Rathian is weakest against dragon.
Recommended Armor Skills
Fire Resistance	Lessen the damage from Rathian's fire-related attacks by building Fire Resistance.
Poison Resistance	If you do not want to bother worrying about Rathian's poison, you can build Poison Resistance to make it a non-issue.
Earplugs	Rathian has a small roar, so Earplugs Lvl 3 should suffice.
Stun Resistance	If you find yourself get stunned often, then dying because you get stunned, you might have to get Stun Resistance to reduce the stunned time or get rid of it altogether.

How to Beat Rathian

Avoid the Somersault

Rathian has an attack that is similar to its counterpart monster, the Rathalos. This attack can deal massive damage and inflict an additional poison status if it lands. This is the main reason why you should never stay in front or behind of Rathian during the hunt. Also, Rathian will always take two steps back before executing this attack. Use this as a signal to back away and keep your distance to completely avoid the attack.

Consecutive Somersault

When Rathian is enraged, he will sometimes use the Somersault attack twice in a row. Be sure that he is finished attacking before trying to engage again.

Triple Fire Breath

Rathian normally shoots one fireball when attacking. However, if he is enraged, he can shoot three fireballs in a row at three different locations. Moving away does not guarantee that you can avoid this attack, it is better if you move left or right and check his head movements to predict where the attack will land.

Using Flash Pods

You can use Flash Pods to shoot Rathian down when he is flying away similar to Rathalos. If you are fast enough, you can use this strategy to counter his somersault attacks to instantly stun him as soon as he lifts off from the ground.

Hitting the Head

Rathian's head takes the most damage out of all of his parts. Be sure to aim for this during the hunt whenever available to maximize your damage output. Also, when he is shooting fireballs from his mouth, his head will be vulnerable for a few seconds. Make sure to avoid the initial fireball and then focus on attacking the head for an easier break.
