Battlefield 2042 Review

A Love Letter to Battlefield Fans

Battlefield 2042 - A Love Letter to Battlefield Fans.png
It can be said that Battlefield 2042 is simply a culmination of over 19 years worth of work building the core mechanics that most players, new and old, could thoroughly enjoy in the hundrends of hours worth of enjoyable content that the game offers on top of a deal that includes a package of content from beloved titles in the franchise such as Battlefield 1942, Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3.

Releasing as a follow up to 2018's Battlefield V, 2042 steps away from the World War 2 era and into the fields of a near-future – a continuation of the story laid out in Battlefield 4 with characters in that game directly participating in the chaotic fun in 2042.

Is Battlefield 2042 a Sequel?

Beautiful and Expansive Maps

Battlefield 2042 - Beautiful and Expansive Maps.png
One of the things that truly makes 2042 shine is its large scale that doesn't feel empty. From futuristic cities filled with towering skyscrapers to a sand-filled desert, players will feel the grandiose scope of the battle they find themselves in with every match they enter.

These maps do not remain static however, as expansive storms can often rip the land apart, changing the dynamics of how opposing teams will have to prioritize their objectives. Environmental destruction – termed as "Levolution" – unfortunately, has been turned down, limiting the destruction players wield at their hands at the expense of beautifully built structures and set pieces.

Hours Worth of Gameplay to Unlock Content

Similar to other titles in the franchise, Battlefield 2042 has a number of weapons, vehicles, and gear that they can unlock through hundreds of hours worth of gameplay.

Spread out across several classes, unlockables will see players on hours of grinding for levels and kills, with each having their own accessories and attachments that are more than just cosmetic pieces – each one serving a very real purpose to combat that provides players with a motivation to grab them all.

Multiple Game Modes

Battlefield 2042 - Multiple Game Modes.png
The backbone of 2042 is the multiple Game Modes that it lets players take on, with each mode providing players different challenges and obstacles to tackle.

This is 2042's strongest point, as no mode ever feels unbalanced or unfair to any team – particularly when 64 to 128 players all share a responsibility to help the team win a game on some game modes, while the new Hazard Zone breathes new life into the franchise with a Battle Royale-esque experience.

If players desire, a singleplayer experience can be also be achieved by fighting against AI or Bots, which does not limit a player's ability to level up, unlock attachments, and ultimately enjoy the game.

All Game Modes and How to Play

Near Classless Gameplay

2042 changes the tried and tested recipe of the Class-system in past Battlefield titles by introducing Specialists – named characters that play to certain roles similar to those found in the Class-system.

Although the variety in choices for players is a nice touch due to how weapons and gear are open for any player and Specialist to make use of, Specialists only really shine in Hazard Zone, where their Specialties and Traits can help a team make a push towards success.

Minimal Story

Battlefield 2042 - Minimal Story.png
Despite the effort to introduce several storylines in both Battlefield 1 and Battlefield V, 2042 does not have a storyline in-game that players can coherently follow and play. Instead, players will be treated to 2042's world by out-of-game media that they can view through either EA's official website or through the short films they plan to release.

Story and Plot Summary

A Good Online Experience

Battlefield 2042 - Good Online Experience.png
Battlefield 2042 is an online-only experience, with most of its features locked behind a player's ability to connect to the internet. Although the actual online experience itself is generally good, various bugs and errors in the game due to server issues on EA's side may see players waiting for server stability before they are able to play.

Deciding to play singleplayer in the meantime in such situations is out of the question, as the singleplayer experience of 2042 where players fight against Bots or AI is also locked behind an online connection requirement.

Bug-Filled Game

Since its Early Access Release, 2042 has suffered from multiple bugs, glitches, and error codes stemming from server side issues or actual in-game issues. Fortunately, none of these are truly game breaking, and have several work arounds for them in order to get the game to work.

Most of the time however, the game will run smoothly, and with several updates and fixes on-going, the game can reach an even more perfect state.

Is Battlefield 2042 Worth It?

Yes, But Wait for Fixes

Battlefield 2042 is a great game for newcomers to the series, but older fans may feel less than thrilled with the many changes made to the core mechanics of what made Battlefield as a franchise successful. The game is worth a buy, but players may be better served by waiting some time until fixes can be made to the game's many different bugs and errors.

Nonetheless, 2042 on its own is filled with content and gameplay that players from everywhere can freely enjoy – all of this on top of the addition of classic game modes from 1942, Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3.
