In traditional Battlefield games, player roles are defined by the Class they choose to play as in a particular squad, with each Class limited to specific equipment loadouts and gear.
Battlefield 2042 departs from this limited system, adopting what are called Specialists who have unique traits and Specialties and play towards a certain "class" while allowing players to fully customize their chosen character's gear or equipment.

Although Battlefield 2042 has moved away from the rigid Class-system, Specialists that players can choose from in the game do still perform a certain "role" or "class" within a squad.
This is done through the different traits and Specialties that are specific to the Specialist chosen, with each Trait and Specialty making a Specialist fit into one of four "classes" – Assault, Recon, Support, and Engineer.

Traits and Specialties are unique attributes or gear that are specific to each individual Specialist.
Traits behave like an intangible attribute that can affect a player's speed, damage resistance, or having the ability to see enemy movements amongst others. Specialties, meanwhile are specific gear that each Specialist carries with them that allow each Specialist to perform their "role" better, such as Grappling Hooks, Ballistic Shields, and Recon Drones.

Unlike the Class System, players can now have access to any sort of gear or equipment they wish to use, regardless of the Specialist and its defined role that they choose.
In simple terms, players can choose a Specialist that is regarded as an engineer-class but still play with weapons or equipment that are meant more for other classes.
