Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Overview
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is the fourth main entry in the Metroid Prime series. It is a first-person action-adventure game developed for the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2 by Retro Studios and published by Nintendo. Although it follows the previous entries in the Prime series in terms of numbering, the developers at Retro Studios frame it as the start of a new story arc, meaning newcomers can jump in without prior experience of earlier titles.
The game begins with the series protagonist, Samus Aran, responding to an incident at a Galactic Federation base. This confrontation leads to a conflict with the rival bounty hunter Sylux, an antagonist first introduced in Metroid Prime Hunters. An ensuing event transports Samus to the planet Viewros, along with scattered Federation allies. They must, then, investigate the ruins of the extinct Lamorn civilization and secure objects needed to activate the Chrono Tower, which offers a means of escaping the planet.
Consistent with the previous titles, gameplay combines first-person shooting, platforming, and puzzle-solving, built around the traditional Metroidvania progression system where new abilities unlock previously inaccessible areas. Players still gather information about the environment and lore by using the Scan Visor, as well as explore small tunnels by transforming to the Morph Ball. New to this installment are psychic abilities gained from the Lamorn. These powers allow Samus to manipulate energy motes for puzzle-solving and utilize an enhanced Control Beam that can target multiple points simultaneously.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Gameplay
Gameplay Overview
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond retains the 3D first-person action-adventure gameplay of the previous titles in the Metroid Prime series. Players explore Viewros and acquire new equipment like beam upgrades, missile expansions, and the Morph Ball to open previously inaccessible paths. The Scan Visor remains a primary interaction tool. It provides highlight interactable elements in the environment and reveal weak points of enemies. This time, however, Samus has the Vi-O-La, a motorcycle that allows Samus to rapidly move across various areas. While on the Vi-O-La, the perspective switches to third-person.
One of Beyond's addition to the series are psychic abilities. These powers, activated through a dedicated visor, allow Samus to remotely manipulate specific environmental objects, such as attracting energy motes to receptacles or moving platforms. It also enhances certain upgrades, like the Control Beam, which, if charged, can be guided by the player in slow motion after firing.
Characters
Samus

Samus Aran is the protagonist of the Metroid series and one of the most renowned bounty hunters in the galaxy. She was adopted and raised by the Chozo, an advanced bird-like race, who trained her to become a warrior. Later, she joined the Galactic Federation Police before leaving to pursue a career as a bounty hunter.
Inheriting enhanced physiology from her Chozo DNA, Samus is highly skilled and equipped with her advanced cybernetic Power Suit, which features an array of abilities such as the Arm Cannon and Morph Ball. Her resume of impressive achievements—which includes the near eradication of the Metroid species and the complete dismantling of the Space Pirate fortress on Zebes—has cemented her status as a legendary figure throughout the galaxy. In Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, she embarks on a new mission, seemingly facing off against the enigmatic bounty hunter Sylux.
Sylux

Sylux is a bounty hunter first introduced in the Nintendo DS game Metroid Prime Hunters. He utilizes stolen Galactic Federation technology, including the Shock Coil weapon and the Lockjaw alternate form. Sylux harbors an unexplained animosity toward the Galactic Federation and Samus Aran, who is often an ally of the Federation. He made a brief appearance in the Special Ending of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, and is now the main antagonist of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.
