Ending Explained

The ending of The Callisto Protocol provides more questions than answers to players who have finished the game. Read on to understand what happened in the ending and what it means for the game's future.

The Callisto Protocol Ending Explained

Jacob Completes the Antidote

After taking down the mutated Ferris, Jacob immediately runs up to his corpse and extracts a sample from his eyeball. Doing this completes the antidote he needs to save Dani from becoming fully infected.

Warden Cole Was A Hologram

Immediately after, Warden Cole attempts to persuade Jacob to give him the sample, offering an escape pod in exchange. However, Dani interrupts the two by shooting the Warden, inadvertently revealing that he was a hologram all along.

The Protocol Moves Forward

Disregarding Warden Cole's words, Jacob saves Dani by injecting her with the antidote. This act displeases Cole, but he quickly brushes it off as the data obtained from the events at Black Iron Prison "will carry the Protocol to the next phase." This quote suggests that The Callisto Protocol could receive an expansion or sequel in the future.

Jacob Sacrifices Himself

As Warden Cole leaves, he starts a self-destruct sequence, forcing Jacob and Dani to run to the escape pods. Jacob reaches the evacuation bay first but finds only one escape pod left.

Wanting to atone for his involvement in the events on Europa, Jacob sacrifices himself by shoving Dani into the pod and sending her to safety. However, he also left Dani a parting gift: a Biophage larva that she can use to expose the truth.

Jacob Might Survive

The scene cuts back to Jacob, exhausted after fending off waves of Biophage. While it seems like all hope is lost, Dr. Mahler's hologram shows up and tells Jacob that "there might be a way out after all," which again suggests that there may be more in store for The Callisto Protocol in the future.

Potential Setup for Future Content

Overall, the ending of The Callisto Protocol provides many open doors that the developers could take for future game content, especially considering the words of Warden Cole and Dr. Mahler.

We may receive more answers when the Story DLC, part of the game's Season Pass, arrives in Summer 2023.
