Beta Paths were a previously hinted at feature by the developers of the Callisto Protocol that rewards players who explore the optional areas scattered throughout the game. Read on to know more about what Beta Paths are including whether they are tied to the story and if they are worth exploring.
List of Contents
Based on pre-release interviews with Glen Schofield - head of Striking Distance Studios - Beta Paths are simply extra areas that players have the option to explore while progressing through the main story. Usually, these secluded levels contain valuable loot and data bios that expand the universe of the Callisto Protocol.
While some Beta Paths loop back to the main story areas, most are simply dead ends that have you going back through where you entered from. Given the lack of a map, these areas sometimes only exist to confuse the player as they stumble their way through the terrors of Black Iron Prison.
Despite the loot that you can get from exploring Beta Paths, there isn't really much incentive to look for them especially at higher difficulties. With extra enemies to fight and a limited inventory space that can barely fit the loot you find anyway, there really isn't much point exploring further unless you're a completionist or are running out of supplies.
If you are a completionist then Beta Path exploration is a must. Not only will you find data bios that cannot be normally obtained, you will also find secret areas that are the key to getting hard-to-earn trophies like The Commonality. Explore the optional paths to uncover many more secrets such as the little callbacks to PUBG that the developers left behind.
Trophy List and Achievement Guide
Since the game has a rather peculiar checkpoint system, adding Beta Path exploration to your route will sometimes be to the detriment of the player. If you're on Maximum Security and not really wanting for supplies, then Beta Paths should be avoided in order to lessen the risk of carrying damage taken over to a new story checkpoint.
As of writing, there have been no indications that there are alternate or branching paths to the main story. Players who have completed the game will know that the story of Jacob Lee was pretty much linear from start to finish.
With no story-altering decisions to be made, players (especially Season Pass owners) looking for alternate endings or different narratives will have to wait until the Story DLC drops sometime in the Summer of 2023.
