What to Upgrade First

Jump to a Section

Prioritize Riot Control Swing on the Stun Baton

Stun baton

Weapon Upgrade Pre-Requisite Credits
Effect
Riot Control Swing None 300 Credits
Unlocks a new, heavier attack. Ideal for extreme situations requiring damage over control.

Despite being one of the earlier weapons you find, the Stun Baton is a reliable weapon that can help you all throughout the game. The Riot Control Swing upgrade extends your attack range to enemies that are further from you and deals more damage than your regular melee hits. This attack is essential as you won't have much firepower early on.

Take Damage Upgrade Level 2 for Late Game

Weapon Upgrade Pre-Requisite Credits
Effect
Damage Upgrade Level 2 Damage Upgrade Level 2 2700 Credits
Maxes out the damage of the Stun Baton.

As you reach the later stages of the game, you'll find that firearms are the better primary weapon when it comes to fighting off enemies. However, it would still be good to upgrade the Stun Baton in case you run out of ammo. Upgrading to Damage Upgrade Level 2 lets you maximize the power of each melee hit and wears down enemies quicker.

Purchase Small GRP Upgrades

Get a GRP
During the Aftermath story chapter, Jacob will need to head to the Medical Bay at which point you will find and equip the GRP. Once you have both the GRP and Stun Baton, fending off enemies without expending ammo will be much easier.

Weapon Upgrade Pre-Requisite Credits
Effect
GRP Recharge Speed Upgrade - Small None 300 Credits
Increases the GRP's recharge rate.
Energy Upgrade - Small None 300 Credits
Increases the GRP's max energy capacity.
GRP Velocity Upgrade - Small None 300 Credits
Increases the GRP's launch strength. Targets can be injured on impact.

You'll want to purchase all Small upgrades for the GRP prioritizing Energy Upgrade - Small as this increases the GRP's max energy capacity.

GRP (Gravity Restraint Projector) Upgrades and How to Get

Prioritize Energy Capacity Upgrades

Weapon Upgrade Pre-Requisite Credits
Effect
Energy Upgrade - Max Energy Upgrade - Medium 2700 Credits
Maxes out the GRP's energy capacity.

The GRP's Energy Capacity can feel very insufficient even for players that don't use this weapon much when fighting enemies. For that reason you want to purchase Energy Upgrade - Max to get more efficient utility with the GRP.

Max Out the Hand Cannon

The Callisto Protocol - How to Get the Pistol
The BI-55 Pistol "Hand Cannon" can be acquired by printing it from the Reforge Station at the start of Aftermath. As you won't have a lot of space in your inventory early on, purchasing the High Capacity Magazine Upgrade can prove very beneficial since it provides extra ammo.

Weapon Upgrade Pre-Requisite Credits
Effect
Stability Upgrade None 200 Credits
Reduces weapon recoil.
High Capacity Magazine Upgrade Stability Upgrade 200 Credits
Increases ammo capacity of the BI-55 Pistol.

Once you have more Callisto Credits, you can purchase the last 2 upgrades for the "Hand Cannon". This weapon might feel underwhelming toward the later stages of the game at which point you can move on and max out whichever weapon feels best for your playstyle.

BI-55 Pistol “Hand Cannon” Upgrades and How to Get

Upgrade to Explosive Rounds Later On

Despite being the first firearm you get in the game, the Hand Cannon holds up very well in from the early-mid game and can also be a decent alternative weapon in the late game. The TK23 Boom Bullets inflict decent damage thanks to the previous Magnum Rounds Damage Upgrade combined with the explosive rounds.

Avoid Purchasing Consumables

The Callisto Protocol - Ammo on Chests

Consumables such as ammo and Health Injectors can be purchased alongside these upgrades but we advise against this unless you really need them. These items can be found in various places such as chests, lockers or by stomping on corpses so acquiring them this way and saving your Credits for Upgrades is the best course of action.

Hand Cannon

As mentioned above, upgrading to the TK23 Boom Bullets as the explosive rounds can help you against more durable enemies. This upgrade is also the easiest/quickest way to unlock the You Need a Gun trophy.

Weapon Upgrade Pre-Requisite Credits
Effect
TK23 "Boom Bullets" Magnum Rounds Damage Upgrade 1800 Credits
Adds alt-fire module that fires explosive rounds. Rounds explode on a delay after impact.

Skunk Gun

Upgrading the Skunk Gun is particularly useful for combining with your melee attacks. Upgrade to the Swarming Rounds for a more lethal combo and finish off enemies in a quicker fashion.

Weapon Upgrade Pre-Requisite Credits
Effect
Swarming Rounds Stability Upgrade 3600 Credits
Modifies this weapon to fire homing ammo that swarms nearby enemies.

Riot Gun

The final upgrade to the Riot Gun is Explosive Rounds Upgrade and as the name suggests, shoots out ammo that explode shortly after impact. This is particularly useful when facing groups of enemies as the explosion deals damage in a radius.

Weapon Upgrade Pre-Requisite Credits
Effect
Explosive Rounds Upgrade High Capacity Magazine Upgrade 2700 Credits
Upgrades the Riot Gun's projectiles, which explode shortly after impact. Deals extra damage to anything within the blast radius.

Tactical Pistol

The Tac Pistol is a great weapon for getting quick shots off thanks to its quick fire rate but upgrading to the TK33 Burst Mode equips the weapon with a high-damage burst attack.

Weapon Upgrade Pre-Requisite Credits
Effect
TK33 "Burst Mode" High Capacity Magazine Upgrade 3600 Credits
Adds alt-fire module with high-damage 5 round burst.

Assault Rifle

Once you purchase the Assault Rifle, you can get away with only upgrading it to Magnum Rounds Damage Upgrade as the added damage can go a long way when fighting mutated biophages.

The Assault Rifle has one of the more expensive upgrade paths and while upgrading it all the way to TK63 Homing Rounds can make the weapon stronger, it would be better to use those upgrades for other equipment such as the GRP or the previously mentioned guns.

Weapon Upgrade Pre-Requisite Credits
Effect
Magnum Rounds Damage Upgrade High Capacity Magazine Upgrade 1500 Credits
Increases the damage of the Assault Rifle.
