When you give an item to a monster, check if a Heart icon will appear. If it appears with four flowers around it, you have successfully tamed it! Give a monster its liked items for a higher chance of taming it.
You can use random items to tame a monster like Fodder, herbs, seeds, lumber, stone, and other items you can easily find. They will just have a smaller chance of taming a monster, compared to its liked items.
If a skull and crossbones icon appears after the heart, it means the attempt was unsuccessful. You need to give another item to try again. If you don't see a Heart icon, it will be impossible to tame that monster.
You can use your Spell Seal, by pressing ZR, to make a monster drop items. You can collect these items, fast travel somewhere else to make the monster respawn, and then use your Spell Seal again to farm a specific item.
For some monsters, like bosses, you may need to lower their HP so that they can drop items. Lock-in on an enemy by pressing the RIght Analog Stick to check if you can steal their items. If it has a lock icon, you need to lower its HP to remove it.

When attempting to tame a monster, you can use your brush to increase the probability of taming them. You can brush a monster up to 15 times.

It is highly recommended to tame the Boss Monster, Nine- Tailed Fox, as soon as you can. Not only does it have a variety of long-range attacks, but its also one the fastest monsters you can capture.
You can easily tame it by farming Nine-Tailed Fox Bells. First you need to reduce its HP to 50% or until its bar is purple, then using a Spell Seal. Once it drops an item, you can fast travel to Whispering Woods: Depths to respawn it and repeat the process.
When you have enough bells, you need to reduce its HP to 50% and give it to the fox until it is tamed. Save before entering so that you can re-use the bells if the attempt failed.

If a monster barn is full, you will not be able to tame anymore monsters no matter how many items you give it. The smallest barn allows a maximum of 4 monsters. A monster barn can be expanded at Palmo Studio.
You may also opt to remove monsters in the barn by selecting Send to Forest of Beginnings. This option will permenantly delete the monster, so only do this if you are sure.

Pressing and Holding ZL lets you use Spell Seals and will only capture monsters temporarily. Monsters captured this way will return to the forest after one day passes. You can still attempt to tame a captured monster by giving it items.

When you approach a monster and see the Release option, this means you've only temporarily captured this monster and haven't tamed it.

Boss Monsters can only be tamed when given an item they like. Some of them, like the Nine-Tailed Fox, need to have their HP lowered before trying to tame them. These Bosses must also be defeated for the first time before taming them.

When players are taming the same monster a for a second, they will have a lower success rate. To increase your chance of taming it, you can either use your brush or give its favorite item.
It will be difficult trying to tame a monster that is a higher level than you. If the monster you're facing has its name displayed in orange or red, it means the monster has a higher level than yours. In this case, make sure to raise your level if you need to tame stronger monsters.
How to Level Up Fast: EXP Grinding Guide

Some monsters give you materials once a day and immediately after taming it. Increasing its friendship level will also increase the level of the materials you get.
When you just tamed a monster, its best to give it to the monster instead of shipping it for a few days. This will increase the quality of the material it produces.

Monsters will also be available to do Field Chores! Once your friendship reaches a level of 3 or higher, you can assign them to work.

It is possible to ride some monsters, after you raise their friendship level. Simply approach the monster and press A then select Ride.
There are some monsters such as Nine-Tailed Fox that move much faster than you do on your own so its recommended to take them along when exploring.

Once you've tamed a monster, you can take it to battle and have it fight alongside you. To do this, simply approach it and press A then select Take along. It will then follow you and attack with you in battle.
