you can only play Rune Factory 5 by yourself

Rune Factory 5 is a single player game, as such there are currently no local or online co-op options available.

Although Rune Factory 5 is a single player game, you can take control of more than one character. If you manage to tame a monster that you find in the field, you can have it assist you with farming, or take it along with you to help you fight monsters.

You Can Ask NPCs To Join Your Party

How to recruit an NPC
press L or R during conversations to recruit NPCsPress either the L or R button when having a conversation with an NPC.
You can choose to ask them to join your partyYou can then choose to ask the NPC to join your party.
You can the status of party members in your menuIf your Friendship Level is at least 3, or you have the Companion Crest Equipped, they will accept your request.

NPCs can also join your party to help you capture monsters or clear a dungeon. You simply need to talk to them to activate the request. Note that NPCs will not join you if their Friendship Level is not 3 or higher, or if you do not have the Companion Crest equipped.

Elsje can heal you and is a good way to earn money

While every NPC has a different fighting style, it is recommended that you bring Elsje along when trying to clear dungeons. When your health is low, she will provide you with healing support by tossing food in your general direction. One of the items, Royal Curry, can actually be shipped for a high price making Elsje a good choice for battle support and making money.
