Hippowdon is one of the greatest leads available in the game. It’s bulky enough to tank any offensive lead and can comfortably set Stealth Rock and heal after.
Hippowdon is one of the most accessible Pokemon in the game. It is only absent in Sword and Shield and the Kanto-specific games. In all other games, you can catch it in the wild!

This build uses the Stealth Rock and Whirlwind combo, allowing Hippowdon to force other Pokemon to take damage from entry hazards and Sandstorm if they are vulnerable to it.
| Stats | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Careful Nature Unchanged |
Hippowdon benefits greatly from the Careful Nature. It makes it more tanky as it boosts its special bulk, which is its weaker defensive stat. |
| Ability | Explanation |
|
Sand Stream Sand Stream Summons a sandstorm for 5 turns when the Pokémon enters a battle.
|
While Sand Force isn’t totally useless on Hippowdon, Sand Stream is generally better for it since it takes advantage of its bulk, providing support for your team. |
| Moves | Explanation |
|
Yawn |
If you want to force a switch, you can use Yawn. If the opponent stays in, they will fall asleep. |
|
Protect |
Use it to gain a free turn to recover from Leftovers, which, paired with Slack Off, allows you to recover a large amount of HP. |
This alternative Hippowdon build gives it more options for tanking. Yawn can force a switch, while Protect gives it a turn to recover more if needed.

| Reflect Stealth Rock with Magic Bounce | This build forces Hippowdon to go offensive when matched against a Magic Bounce user. Its attempts to set up Stealth Rock backfire, and you end up taking the Stealth Rock instead. It is best to switch out if you are using Hippowdon against a Pokémon with this ability! |
| Use Moves that Eliminates Entry Hazards | Another way to remove its Stealth Rock is to use moves that clear entry hazards. Some good examples are Rapid Spin and Defog. Mortal Spin also works, but only use it if you are willing to risk your Glimmora early. |
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Use Magic Bounce | Hippowdon will mostly struggle against Pokemon with Magic Bounce. The best Pokemon to counter a Hippowdon lead is Mega Clefable. Not only does it have Magic Bounce, but it also gains the Flying type, making Hippowdon completely useless. |
| Use Moves to Remove Stealth Rock | Moves like Defog, Rapid Spin, and Mortal Spin can help remove Stealth Rock and force Hippowdon to waste a turn setting them up again. Corviknight is one of the best Pokémon to lead against Hippowdon, as it is immune to Ground-type moves and can use Defog. Rapid Spin Starmie is also a good option, as it can gain an early lead and a Speed boost as well. |
Magic Bounce is one of the best counters to Hippowdon, as it can reflect Stealth Rock, Yawn, and Whirlwind, rendering it unable to do anything except attack. Mega Clefable is the bane of Hippowdon’s existence, as it changes its ability to Magic Bounce and gains the Flying type, making Hippowdon practically useless against it.
Magic Bounce Effect and Pokemon With This Ability
You can also use moves like Defog and other moves that remove entry hazards to clear Stealth Rock. You can even build a strategy around it, such as Mega Starmie, which can both boost its Speed while removing them.

Hippowdon
|
Mega Garchomp
|
Heliolisk
|
Lead with Hippowdon and set up Stealth Rock. You can switch to Mega Garchomp afterward to take advantage of the sandstorm. If defeated, send Hippowdon in again to activate Sand Stream. Heliolisk can finish the battle and covers some of the major type disadvantages to Grass and Water.
| Stealth Rock Setter | Substitute Passer |
|---|---|
Hippowdon

Orthworm
|
| Main Sweeper | Secondary Offense |
Mega Garchomp
|
Heliolisk
|
This team mostly functions similarly to the singles team, but with the addition of Orthworm. Orthworm has abilities that can synergize with Hippowdon. You can use Earth Eater if you are planning to spam Earthquake, or Sand Veil to boost its evasion and safely use Shed Tail.
