Garchomp has been relevant in the metagame since its release in Generation 4. Its great offensive stats, Speed tier, and reliable movepool make it a staple in almost every competitive metagame.
Garchomp's effectiveness in its base form is its main strength. It can work with any held item and is not required to Mega Evolve in order to be effective, freeing up your team's Mega Pokemon slot for its teammates.

| Adamant Nature 32 Atk / 32 Spd |
Adamant can be ran for higher damage output if you are not expecting foes to bring their own Choice Scarf Pokemon. |
| Ability | Explanation |
|
Rough Skin Rough Skin The Pokémon's rough skin damages attackers that make direct contact with it.
|
Rough Skin can be useful in breaking Focus Sashes and is the preferred ability to use. Sand Veil is only useful in gimmicky Sand teams due to the evasion being unreliable. |
An Adamant nature can be used to deal more damage with Garchomp at the cost of losing to opposing Choice Scarf Pokemon that are close to Garchomp's Speed tier, including Garchomp mirror matches.

This is the tried and true moveset ever since Garchomp first became VGC-legal more than a decade ago. Earthquake and Rock Slide are its standard spread move options, while Dragon Claw is its main single-target STAB option.
The item slot is flexible depending on your team's needs. We recommend Focus Sash to protect Garchomp from faster Pokemon that can knock it out in one attack such as Dragapult or Mega Froslass.

| Naive Nature 32 Atk / 32 Spd |
Garchomp can use Draco Meteor even with low SpA investment to deal more damage against physically bulky Pokemon. |
|
|
Garchomp can use Draco Meteor to deal reliable damage against physically defensive tanks. For Skarmory specifically, Fire Blast can be ran instead.
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Use faster Pokemon | Garchomp's Speed tier is good, but it is not among the fastest Pokemon in the metagame. It can be easily outsped and knocked out by super-effective attacks. |
| Use Ice-type Pokemon | Garchomp's 4x weakness to Ice makes it easy to knock out using Ice-type moves. |
| Use Physically Bulky Pokemon | Pokemon that specialize in physical bulk can withstand Garchomp's attacks and force it to switch out. |
Garchomp mainly uses its high Speed tier to bully Pokemon slower than it and dish out reliable damage. It suffers against faster Pokemon that can deal super-effective damage.

Garchomp
|
A Hazard Lead such as Skarmory can set up Stealth Rock or Spikes, weakening foes over time as they switch out. Wallbreakers like Mega Greninja can then weaken enemy defensive Pokemon, allowing Choice Scarf Garchomp to come in late game and click Outrage or Earthquake to sweep.

Wash Rotom

|
Garchomp is a plug-and-play Pokemon that can work in almost any team archetype such as Balance, Stall, Sun, or Rain, making it an easy, high-impact inclusion in any team composition. It is not as effective in Trick Room team compositions, but can be still used once Trick Room is over to sweep the remainder of the enemy team.
A special mention goes out to Wash Rotom, who synergizes very well with Garchomp. Rotom can use Discharge and Garchomp can use Earthquake, and both Pokemon will be immune to the other's spread attack.
