The game will put you through some mandatory tutorials when you start. You will need to complete them first before you can have free rein to do what you want.

During the tutorial, you will be given a choice to permanently recruit a Pokemon. This Pokemon will determine your first team of six Pokemon, so it is best to choose carefully.
We recommend that you choose Pikachu if you want a good Single Battle team. If you prefer doing Double Battles, choosing Tyranitar will give you a solid selection of Pokemon.
Best Starter Pokemon to Choose First

After the mandatory tutorials are complete, it is a good idea to complete the optional Battle Tutorials. These can be found under the Train menu. These tutorials can give you useful rewards such as Victory Points (VP), Quick Coupons, Teammate Tickets, and even Mega Stones.

If you want more Pokemon options in order to build varied teams, you may recruit more Pokemon. You may recruit Pokemon for free every 22 hours, or use Quick Coupons or VP to recruit Pokemon at any time.
Keep in mind that you will need to spend 2500 VP or 1 Teammate Ticket in order to recruit a Pokemon permanently. If you are unsure whether to keep a Pokemon or not, you may do a few battles with it to see if you like its playstyle.

If you have battle-ready Pokemon from other games, you may transfer them from Pokemon HOME to Pokemon Champions.
You may also use Pokemon HOME to transfer in Pokemon that are not available for Recruitment, such as Eternal Flower Floette.
How to Transfer Pokemon Using Pokemon HOME

If your Pokemon are not battle-ready yet, you may want to use Battle Training to give them better builds.
In Battle Training, you can change a Pokemon's Stat Points or EVs, Stat Alignment or Nature, and Moves. This will cost VP or Training Tickets.

Another important aspect of team building is the Held Items. These can assist you in battle through boosting stats and damage, healing, and other useful effects.
You may buy these items in the Shop. You may also get a Mega Stone in order to be able to use a powerful Mega Evolved Pokemon.
Best Items to Buy from the Shop

Once your team is fully built, you may participate in Ranked Battles. Participating in Ranked Battles gives you VP, which can be used in recruiting and training more Pokemon. It also gives you Season Points for the Battle Pass, which gives you useful rewards.
If you climb through the ranks, you may also obtain useful rewards such as extra slots in your Box storage.

Pokemon Champions will also regularly hold online tournaments for players to participate in. These tournaments may involve prizes such as useful Pokemon and items, so be sure to prepare your best team for these events!
