Mega Gengar is the best Perish Trapper in the game due to its ability Shadow Tag which prevents the enemies from switching out.
Its high Spe allows it to use Perish Song before getting attacked, and it can stall for time using Protect and either Disable or Substitute before switching out on the last turn and knocking out the foes through the Perish timer.
Mega Gengar can also perform a standard offensive role with its high Spe and SpA along with dual STAB options in Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb.

Prevents foes from using non-damaging attacks. |
This is the standard Perish Trap Mega Gengar set you'll see online. Shadow Tag prevents foes from switching out while Perish Song starts a three-turn timer that knocks out all Pokemon on the field if they remain in play after those three turns.
Protect buys a guaranteed turn of Perish Trap, while Disable is used to prevent the foe from using their last attack. More often than not, enemy Pokemon will use their best attacks to knock out Gengar quickly before the Perish timer runs out, leaving them prone to Disable.
Taunt can be used over Disable to target support Pokemon, preventing them from using key non-damaging attacks like Tailwind that can affect future turns.

Substitute |
Provides extra survivability and protects Mega Gengar from getting knocked out by one attack. |
This is the standard offensive Mega Gengar build outside of Perish Trap teams. Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb are the two preferred STAB attacks, while the utility moves round out the set. Protect is mandatory in Doubles, but can be replaced by another utility move in Singles.
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Use switching moves | Moves like U-turn, Volt Switch, Flip Turn, and Baton Pass bypass Shadow Tag and allow the user to switch out. |
| Use faster Pokemon | Mega Gengar's low bulk makes it vulnerable to faster Pokemon like Dragapult and Choice Scarf users like Garchomp. |
Mega Gengar's Shadow Tag is powerful, but there are ways around it. Moves like U-turn, Volt Switch, Flip Turn, and Baton Pass allow the user to switch out through Shadow Tag, and Ghost-type Pokemon are immune to Shadow Tag.
Alternatively, defeat Mega Gengar before the Perish timer expires in order to get free from the Shadow Tag lock. Faster Pokemon like Dragapult and Choice Scarf users like Garchomp can easily outspeed and knock out Mega Gengar.

Mega Gengar's role in a Singles team is to defeat the enemy Pokemon that can wall your late-game sweeper. Have Empoleon set up Stealth Rock and then use a slow U-turn to safely switch into Mega Gengar.
Once the main check to your late-game sweeper is knocked out, have Mega Gengar dish out as much damage as possible to soften the other Pokemon before going down. Your late-game sweeper can then switch in and clean up.

Kommo-o
|
Have Mega Gengar use Perish Song while the support Pokemon hinder the enemies with their utility moves. Stall using Protect and Disable, then switch out on the last turn to have Perish Song knock out the foe's Pokemon.
Kommo-o is a good offensive Pokemon for this team due to its ability Soundproof making it immune to the effects of Perish Song. It can stall for time using Iron Defense and utilize the Def boost with Body Press.
