With its Drought ability, Mega Charizard Y has always been an easy slot for Sun teams ever since its introduction in Pokemon X and Y. Pokemon with abilities like Cholorophyll and other types weak to Water can appreciate having Sun up.

Scorching Sands |
Roost |
||||||||||
With Weather Ball being a 100 BP STAB move under Sun, Mega Charizard Y becomes an unstoppable powerhouse under the Sun.
Combined with Scorching Sands for the Electric-types and Solar Beam for Water and Rock-types, it can even deal with its weaknesses comfortably.
| Moves | Explanation |
|---|---|
|
Focus Blast |
Can be used to replace Scorching Sands if your team needs coverage |
|
Sunny Day |
Situational, but can be slotted in for teams that run weather and rocks. |
|
Air Slash |
Can be used to Flinch opponents, but not really wanted due to it already covers it's weaknesses. |
Mega Charizard Y doesn't have much flexibility when it comes to its build. While you can deal with Fighting and Grass types with Air Slash, it's not as potent as it would be on something like Togekiss.
Mega Charizard X

Nature | Jolly (Spe▲, SpA▼) |

Dragon Dance |

Focusing on Singles, we have Mega Charizard X, with its Tough Claws Ability! This will allow Mega Charizard X to sweep after setting up a few Dragon Dances. All three of the moves listed will be buffed by Tough Claws.
| Stats | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Adamant Nature 32 HP / 32 Atk |
You can also go for a Bulky Build and setting up against Grass and Steel-types |
| Moves | Explanation |
|
Will-O-Wisp |
Can cripple Physical attackers so you can set up safely |
|
Outrage |
Much more powerful than Dragon Claw at the cost of locking you into the move. |
|
Swords Dance |
This is a faster setup move that will get your Charizard to sweep the opponent. |
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Use Bulky Attackers | Mega Charizard X doesn't have much options in beating a dedicated defensive Pokemon on a stall focused or balanced team. it struggles greatly especially against Sand teams. |
| Faster Attackers | Losing its Flying typing makes it susceptible to a lot of types, especially the Ground moves. A Scarfed Garchomp or Mega Excadrill can easily take Mega Charizard X down if you don't know what you're doing. |
Mega Charizard X does struggle with Sand Teams and other Bulky or Fast Water Pokemon. Try to bring your own Bulky Pokemon like Clefable, Azumarill, or Dragonite so you can set up safely.
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Other Weather Setters | Overwriting the Sun can significantly lower Mega Charizard Y's Damage output. |
| Stealth Rocks and Rock type Attackers | Having rocks up will make it difficult for Charizard to pivot and change the weather. |
Mega Charizard Y and its teammates heavily relies on having Sun up to deal most of its damage. Taking Sun away will force it to switch out or run Sunny Day which would be a waste of a move slot.
Rock-type Pokemon and Stealth Rocks can also make it dangerous for Charizard to switch out and reapply the Sun.
| Sun Setter | Chlorophyll Speedster |
|---|---|
Mega Charizard Y
|
Venusaur
|
Having a core of the sun setter, Mega Charizard Y, and a Pokemon with Chlorophyll is a classic combo since Generation VI. They can cover each others' weaknesses and can easily overwhelm any unprepared opponent .
| Anti-Rocks Lead | Setup Sweeper | Ground Type Removal |
|---|---|---|
Hatterene
|
Mega Charizard X
|
Meowscarada
|
Losing the Flying-typing does severely affect Charizard, and getting rid of threats will your main prerogative to winning. Grass-types can easily scare off Ground-types and bringing Magic Bounce Pokemon like Hatterene or a Rapid Spinner like Starmie to get rid of Stealth Rocks will be your key to success.
