Protean Makes it Very Flexible

Protean is one of the strongest abilities in the game, especially in Singles. This turns Meowscarada into a very versatile attacker since it can choose its STAB and quickly KO opposing Pokemon before they can react.

Also Has Strong Support Tools

Aside from its array of offensive options, Meowscarada also has a good amount of utility tools. When combined with its blinding fast Speed stat, they can also act as a good support as well as an attacker.

This is a standard Meowscarada build that goes fully on the offensive. Protean should generally be used to turn Meowscarada into either a Dark or Normal-type to remove Grass' many weaknesses, but this can change from battle to battle.

Standard Offensive Meowscarada Alternate Builds

Ability Explanation
Overgrow Often a better choice in Doubles rather than Singles.

If you do not wish to change Meowscarada's typing, Overgrow is actually a better option than Protean. This is because it can live at low HP thanks to Focus Sash, guaranteeing that Flower Trick gets boosted from Overgrow.
Moves Explanation
A coverage move that allows Meowscarada hit a ton of Pokemon with super effective moves when combined with Grass and Dark.
An always reliable move for Singles since it allows Meowscarada to pivout out of bad matchups while still doing chip damage.
A good option into Pokemon like Kingambit, since they normally wall Meowscarada.
A good coverage move against Fighting-types, and it will also turn Meowscarada into one of the best defesive typings in the game with Protean.

Standard Offensive Meowscarada Weaknesses

Counter Pokemon | Info
Aim to Gain Speed Control
Alolan Ninetales Whimsicott Araquanid

Since Meowscarada is naturally fast, you'll want to aim to outspeed by using Speed control tools like Tailwind, Icy Wind, or Sticky Webs. This way, you'll be able to act before them and exploit Meowscarada's bad defensive typing.
Set Up Stealth Rocks
Hisuian Arcanine Glimmora Archaludon

If you're playing Singles, it's recommended to set up Stealth Rocks before Meowscarada appears. This is because it will most likely be using the Focus Sash item, and you'll be able to KO it quickly after it's been broken.

Meowscarada Checks and Counters

Counter Pokemon | Info
Protect to Scout Typing
Ditto

If you're not sure what an opposing Meowscarada is up to, you can opt to Protect first to scout what type it changes to. Since Protean only works once per battle, you'll be able to form a better gameplan going forward.
Use Priority Moves
Mega Lucario Mamoswine Conkeldurr

If you want to exploit Meowscarada's default typing before Protean, you can use moves with plus priority. Look for Ice and Fighting attacks like Ice Shard, Mach Punch, or Vacuum Wave to quickly knock them out.

Wait for Typing to Be Locked In

A good strategy to see what your opponent's Meowscarada is planning is to use Protect for a turn and see which type it changes into. This way, you know what its weaknesses will be for the rest of the battle, or if it's using Overgrow instead when its type doesn't change.

Protect Effect and Pokemon That Learn It

Use Moves with Plus Priority

Meowscarada is incredibly fast with a base Speed of 123, and only a few Pokemon in the game will be able to outspeed it. If you want to deal with it before it gets any damage off, you'll want to use moves with high priority.

As a note, Upper Hand is also a niche choice to catch a Meowscarada off guard, but it's only really useful if you know that it will use Sucker Punch to KO a weak Pokemon.
