Tyranitar is fielded because of its Sand Stream ability which sets up Sandstorm weather upon entry. It is used as a soft-counter to both Sun and Rain teams while also setting up its own partner Excadrill with Sand Rush to overwhelm their foes.
Tyranitar can also function well on its own as a bulky offensive attacker. It can rely on its natural stats and serve as a reliable damage source, or it can set up using Dragon Dance to act as a late-game sweeper.

An alternate Dark-type STAB option that removes the foe's held item, at the cost of doing less damage if the foe has no held item. |
Lash Out is the Dark-type STAB attack of choice due to how common Intimidate is in the Doubles format. Rock Slide is self-explanatory, and Low Kick is used to counter both Archaludon and Kingambit.

Stone Edge can be ran if a stronger Rock-type move is necessary. |
Dark-type STAB is dropped in favor of Low Kick as a way to counter both Archaludon and Kingambit. If neither of these cause problems for your team, you may opt to drop Low Kick for your preferred Dark-type STAB attack.
Lum Berry is used to counter Will-O-Wisp users and keep Tyranitar's Atk high after a Dragon Dance.
In Singles, drop Protect for your preferred coverage option.

Lash Out can be ran to counter Intimidate users at the cost of a minor damage loss against everything else. |
|
Stealth Rock |
Stealth Rock can be ran if no one else on the team can use it. |
Mega Tyranitar is more viable in Singles than Doubles due to the opportunity cost of using your Mega slot on it. Run Stealth Rock if there are no other Pokemon on your team that can learn it.
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Use Fighting-type attacks | Tyranitar's 4x weakness to Fighting-type attacks leaves it vulnerable to Fighting-type Pokemon |
| Override the weather | Tyranitars are often accompanied by Excadrills to take advantage of Sand. Override the weather to negate Excadrill's speed boost. |
Fast Fighting-type Pokemon pose a huge threat to Tyranitar as they can easily outspeed it, sometimes even after one Dragon Dance.
Conkeldurr is not fast, but it has enough physical bulk to withstand Tyranitar's attacks and heal back the damage it takes using Drain Punch. Alternatively, it also has Mach Punch to deal significant damage using a priority attack.
In Doubles, Tyranitar is always used as a way to set up Sandstorm weather. More often than not, Excadrill will also be on its team to take advantage of Sandstorm weather using Sand Rush. Override Sandstorm with your own weather setter to neutralize Excadrill!

Mega Tyranitar can set up Stealth Rock early game and then find an opportunity to set up Dragon Dance late game when an opportunity is present. Excadrill is used to abuse Sand Rush and deal significant damage to its foes, while Palafin is used as a pivot with Flip Turn to get Excadrill in safely.

Tyranitar and its best friend Excadrill have been tag-teaming the VGC metagame since Excadrill's debut in Generation 5. These two are very commonly found together in most teams due to their amazing synergy as Sandstorm setter and Sandstorm abuser.
Sand Rush doubles Excadrill's Speed in Sandstorm weather, and together with Excadrills high Atk stat, can easily outspeed and deal significant damage to their foes.
Wash Rotom is also a good teammate for both of them as it carries Will-O-Wisp to burn physical Fighting-type Pokemon and also has Levitate to be immune to Excadrill's STAB Earthquakes.
The last team slot can be filled by your preferred support Pokemon or an alternate coverage attacker depending on the foe's team composition.
