Excadrill is the premiere attacker in Sandstorm teams, utilizing Sand Rush to outspeed most of its foes and deal massive damage with its high Atk stat. It has a STAB spread move in Earthquake and a single-target STAB move in Iron Head, allowing it to attack both ways. When all else fails, fast Rock Slides can lead to stolen victories through random flinches.
Mega Excadrill isn't too popular, but it has a unique niche with its ability, Piercing Drill. It can break through Protects and deal 25% of its normal damage against Pokemon that use Protect or similar moves.
Protect is an important part of the Doubles metagame, and Piercing Drill allows Mega Excadrill to guarantee damage against key targets.

Drill Run |
Drill Run can be used in place of Earthquake if your team has no Earthquake-immune Pokemon |
This is the standard Sand Rush offensive build for Excadrill. With the lack of Life Orb in the current version of Pokemon Champions, we recommend Lum Berry to protect Excadrill against Burn and other statuses.
Earthquake and Iron Head are its main STAB options, while Rock Slide is there for coverage against Mega Charizard Y and also a desperation attack in case things go south by relying on flinches to steal victories.

Iron Head |
Iron Head can be ran over either OHKO attack if coverage is necessary, but you risk the OHKO move not working on a foe immune to it. |
This build is only used with Mega Hawlucha on the same team. This gimmick setup has Mega Hawlucha using Entrainment on either Excadrill or a target foe to grant No Guard, and then Excadrill uses a OHKO move to knock out the foe in one hit.
Earthquake is Excadrill's plan B in case the Entrainment method isn't viable. Mega Hawlucha's Flying typing allows it to avoid getting hit by Earthquake.

Rock Slide |
Rock Slide is the preferred coverage option in Singles where Protect is unnecessary. |
This is a niche build aimed to utilize Piercing Drill to clean up foes through Protect. Have Mega Excadrill use Swords Dance when the coast is clear and then sweep with its strong attacks and high base Speed.
Mega Excadrill isn't too viable in Singles due to the lack of Protect in the Singles metagame. It is meant to be used against foes that run stall strategies relying on Protect to gain passive recovery through things like Leftovers or Leech Seed.

This is the ideal Singles build for Excadrill. It is meant to act as a lead, laying down Stealth Rock and using Rapid Spin to clear Stealth Rock and other hazards on your side of the field.
Focus Sash is the ideal item in order to guarantee Stealth Rock is placed on your opponent's field.
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Change the Weather | Excadrill relies on Sand Rush to bully its foes. Without Sand Rush, it can be easily outsped and knocked out. |
| Use faster Pokemon outside of Sandstorm | Outside Sandstorm, Excadrill can be easily outsped and knocked out. |
| Use super-effective priority attacks | Excadrill is fast in Sandstorm, but still loses to super-effective priority attacks like Aqua Jet and Mach Punch. |
Excadrill is not too bulky, making it prone to getting outsped and knocked out when Sand Rush isn't active. Passive weather setters like Politoed and Torkoal are ideal as they can automatically set weather upon entry.
Despite Excadrill having high Speed in Sandstorm, it is still prone to priority attacks. High Atk users of Aqua Jet and Mach Punch like Azumarill and Conkeldurr are ideal as they deal super-effective damage using priority attacks.

Utility Lead Excadrill can fit into almost any team composition, as its role is simply to set up Stealth Rock and clear opposing hazards with Rapid Spin.
Stealth Rock can be used to chip away at the opposing team's HP, allowing your sweepers to have an easier time knocking out their foes. Pivot Pokemon like Wash Rotom can allow safe switch-ins for your heavy hitters, forcing the foes to switch out and take more damage from both Stealth Rock and your other Pokemon's attacks.

Excadrill and its best friend Tyranitar have been tag-teaming the VGC metagame since Excadrill's debut in Generation 5. These two are very commonly found together in most teams due to their amazing synergy as Sandstorm abuser and Sandstorm setter.
Sand Rush doubles Excadrill's Speed in Sandstorm weather, allowing the pair to deal massive damage with their high Atk stats. Some cheese builds may also include Choice Scarf Tyranitar to have the pair both use fast Rock Slides and flinch their way to victory.
Wash Rotom is also a good teammate for both of them as it carries Will-O-Wisp to burn physical Fighting-type Pokemon which threaten both Tyranitar and Excadrill. It also has Levitate to be immune to Excadrill's STAB Earthquakes.
The last team slot can be filled by your preferred support Pokemon or an alternate coverage attacker depending on the foe's team composition.
