Can Use Magic Bounce

Hatterene has Magic Bounce as its hidden ability. This helps make up for its low Speed, allowing it to set up while staying safe from whatever your opponent’s lead uses.

Can Take on Any Role

Hatterene is a versatile Pokemon that can fulfill both support and offensive roles. It has a variety of moves that can support the team, such as Reflect and Light Screen. If needed, it can also shift to full offense by utilizing its high SpA to deal damage.

This Hatterene build focuses on providing support to the entire team. Nuzzle helps paralyze opponents, allowing it to safely set up Reflect and Light Screen. If there is nothing else to do, Healing Wish can serve as its last hurrah while still being effective, as it heals and cures the Pokemon it switches into upon its defeat.

Full Support Hatterene Alternate Builds

Stats Explanation
Relaxed Nature
Unchanged
Since this build still relies on non-damaging moves, it is best to keep the same nature and stat spread as the original build, as it is geared towards Hatterene’s survivability.
Ability Explanation
Magic Bounce Magic Bounce also remains its main ability, since it is one of Hatterene’s most important traits, especially when sent out as a lead.
Moves Explanation
Substitute can synergize well with Baton Pass. You can pass the Substitute to another Pokémon after setting up the needed screens, if you have enough HP left to pull it off.
Only run this if you have Substitute. Otherwise, stick with Healing Wish, as it allows you to fully heal the Pokemon you switch into.

This alternative build focuses on passing a Substitute. Since Hatterene moves last, it can safely set one up and tank enough damage the next turn to pass it. However, you need to make sure you are facing an opponent that won’t target its weakness.

Cripple Hatterene with Trick or Switcheroo
Heat Rotom Whimsicott

You can cripple Hatterene by forcing it to hold a Choice Scarf. Do this by simply using Trick. The best Pokémon to run this on is Rotom-Heat, as it can also minimize the risk of getting paralyzed with Nuzzle. Whimsicott is also a great alternative for priority Switcheroo.
Force a Switch Out
Incineroar

Parting Shot is the only move you can use to force out Hatterene without Magic Bounce getting in the way. You will get the debuff, but you can just use Parting Shot again to switch out safely.

Hatterene will mostly struggle when facing a Pokemon that can Trick her into holding items that cripple her, such as Choice Scarf. Parting Shot will also force her off the battlefield and prevent her from setting up anything at all.

This build is mainly for Hatterene to set up Trick Room, and if it stays in, it can take advantage of it itself to deal damage. If you want to go offensive, this build should be your go-to.

Stats Explanation
Relaxed Nature
2 HP / 32 Def / 32 Spe
If you want to invest in bulk, change it to this nature, as Hatterene’s SpA is still sufficient enough to deal damage without the boost.
Ability Explanation
Magic Bounce Magic Bounce remains its main ability to gain more protection from non-damaging moves or status-effects.
Moves Explanation
An alternative offensive option if you need to target Ghost-types, though you would lose STAB.
If you need another safety net, carry Protect as one of Hatterene’s moves. This is a good way to protect itself and see if it needs to switch instead.

This alternative Hatterene build just gives her more survivability and move options. If you don’t need any more buffs, you can instead focus on offense.

Similar to the Full Support build, the best way to eliminate Hatterene is to put her at a disadvantage or force her out with Parting Shot.

Hatterene Checks and Counters

Counter Pokemon | Info
Use a Speedy Offensive Pokemon
Mega Gengar Mega Scizor

Hatterene will often start by setting up something, whether to Nuzzle you or put up screens. It is best to attack it while it's vulnerable, and good counters to Hatterene are Mega Gengar and Mega Scizor. Mega Gengar can trap Hatterene, while Mega Scizor can always use Bullet Punch even if Trick Room is up. U-turn can also help Scizor switch out safely.
Use Parting Shot
Incineroar

You can force Hatterene to retreat by using Parting Shot. Since Parting Shot will be reflected back, you will receive the stat drop, but Hatterene will be the one forced to switch out.

As mentioned above, Hatterene will be rendered useless if tricked with a Choice Scarf. You can also force it out with Parting Shot, preventing it from setting up anything at all. This also pressures your opponent to use their sweeper without Hatterene’s support.
