Mega Meganium's Mega Sol ability allows it to use moves like Solar Beam and Synthesis as if Harsh Sunlight was active, even under other weather conditions. Solar Beam will always be a one-turn attack with high damage output, while Synthesis becomes a superior recovery move that heals off most of Mega Meganium's HP per use.
Weather Ball in particular will always be a Fire-type attack for Mega Meganium, allowing it to deal with Grass-type and Steel-type foes. It deals significant Fire-type damage even under Rain, making it one of the best coverage options for Mega Meganium!

Earth Power |
Earth Power does more damage to Archaludon specifically, but loses out on the Fire-type coverage that Weather Ball provides. |
|
Helping Hand |
Helping Hand is a support move in case Mega Meganium isn't taking an offensive role on the team. |
Mega Meganium uses its ability Mega Sol to fire off one-turn Solar Beams to deal relevant damage. Dazzling Gleam is used as a spread attack, and Weather Ball operates as a Fire-type coverage attack, even under other weather conditions like Rain or Sandstorm.
The minimal Speed investment allows Mega Meganium to outspeed neutral Archaludon with zero Speed investment as well as most Kingambit builds. The rest of its stats go into SpA and HP.

Solar Beam |
Solar Beam can be used over Giga Drain if more damage is required. |
|
Substitute |
Substitute can be used on a stall set over one of the attacking moves, with both Leech Seed and Synthesis to recover back the HP lost on creating substitutes. |
This Singles build uses Leech Seed and Synthesis to improve Mega Meganium's sustainability. Giga Drain is a STAB attack that also recovers HP, but can be replaced by Solar Beam. Earth Power is used to deal damage to Poison-type and Steel-type checks that often switch in against Mega Meganium.
The minimal Speed investment allows Mega Meganium to outspeed neutral Archaludon with zero Speed investment as well as most Kingambit builds. The rest of its stats go into SpA and HP.
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Use fast Fire-type or Poison-type Pokemon | Mega Meganium struggles against Fire-type and Poison-type Pokemon, especially if they outspeed it. Grass and Fairy STAB attacks aren't effective against Fire-type Pokemon, while Poison-type attacks deal 4x damage against Mega Meganium. |
| Use Pokemon that excel in Special Defense | Most Mega Meganium sets operate off its high SpA and one-turn Solar Beams. Specially defensive Pokemon can withstand most of its attacks. |
Mega Meganium can be easily outsped and knocked out by Poison-type Pokemon due to its 4x weakness to Poison-type attacks.
Fire-type Pokemon resist both of Mega Meganium's STAB attacks, allowing them to switch in safely and force Mega Meganium to switch out.
Pokemon that excel at Special Defense are great checks to most Mega Meganium builds. Most Mega Meganiums will operate off its SpA due to Solar Beam's quick charge.

Mega Meganium
|
Steel-type and Water-type pivot Pokemon are great allies for Mega Meganium as they can use switching moves like U-turn and Flip Turn to get Mega Meganium in safely. Both of these types also deal with Mega Meganium's common checks, with Scizor switching in against Poison-type Pokemon and Palafin switching in against Fire-type Pokemon.

Mega Meganium excels in a Rain team due to Rain neutralizing its Fire weakness. Solar Beam and Weather Ball still function as if they were under Harsh Sunlight, with Solar Beam being a one-turn attack and Weather Ball being a Fire-type attack respectively.
Pelipper is the preferred Rain setter due to its more offensive nature compared to Politoed. A Choice Scarf build allows it to outspeed and knock out Mega Hawlucha before it can use Entrainment to both remove Mega Meganium's Mega Sol and enable its allies to use attacks like Guillotine and Fissure to knock out Mega Meganium in one hit.
A Steel-type Pokemon in the back is preferred to allow Mega Meganium to switch out when expecting Poison-type attacks to target it. Both Archaludon and Kingambit are great options for this role. Rain also neutralizes the Fire weakness of these Steel-type Pokemon which is quite relevant.
