Dragonite has a wide movepool that allows it to be a physical attacker, a special attacker, or even an offensive support. It's also an incredibly hard threat to deal with since Multiscale reduces the damage it takes while at full HP.
Multiscale Effect and Pokemon With This Ability
The only downside at the moment is that Dragonite is a lot more limited in the builds that it can effectively use. For example, Scale Shot is a lot more random without Loaded Dice, and it doesn't have access to its very powerful Tera Normal Choice Band set from Scarlet and Violet.

This build aims to use weather conditions to enable Mega Dragonite to attack with its strongest special moves. It can also use supportive moves like Tailwind to help enable other powerful weather attackers, like Archaludon or Tyranitar.
| Stats | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Adamant Nature 32 HP / 17 Def / 17 SpA |
Can invest more into Dragonite's physical bulk to help it survive attacks it normally wouldn't be able to. |
| Moves | Explanation |
|
Thunder |
A coverage move used on Rain teams to help deal with Steel-types that resist Dragon and Flying. |
|
Haze |
An alternate supporting move to help deal with opponents that increase their stats or allies that drop theirs. |
|
Weather Ball |
Adapts its damage type to the current weather, and it becomes a powerful 100 BP single target attack. |
|
Dragon Pulse |
Alternate option for Draco Meteor if you don't want to deal with the stat drops that you get. |
| Item: Sitrus Berry | Hurricane 102 ~ 121 (51.2 ~ 60.8%) Guaranteed 3HKO w/ Berry |
| Item: Froslassite | Blizzard 168 ~ 198 (84.8 ~ 100%) 6.3% Chance to OHKO through Multiscale |

| Change the Weather | Generally, Mega Dragonite will want to utilize weather to access some of the strongest Special attacking options that it has. If you want to counter Mega Dragonite specifically, then you will want to make sure you have your own form of weather control. |
| Look to Apply Status Effects | Since Mega Dragonite is forced to hold its Mega Stone, you're free to hit it with Status Effects like Paralysis and Sleep to slow it down. Just make sure to do it after it Mega Evolves since you'll risk wasting a turn into a Lum Berry if you're not careful. |

This is a standard Dragonite set that utilizes physical attacks instead of special. As a note, this build is best used on a regular Dragonite, since Mega Evolving lowers its Attack stat.
| Stats | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Jolly Nature 2 HP / 32 Atk / 32 Spe |
A max speed spread to help with quickly KO'ing opponents. |
| Ability | Explanation |
|
Inner Focus Inner Focus The Pokémon never flinches when attacked and is unaffected by Intimidate.
|
If you're playing Doubles, you can opt to use Inner Focus instead to surprise opponents by negating flinches and Intimidate. Unfortunately, this isn't as useful in Singles since the power of Multiscale is a lot more powerful in that format. |
| Moves | Explanation |
|
Roost |
An amazing move in Singles since it makes Dragonite very difficult to kill, and it will reactivate Multiscale if it heals Dragonite back to full. |
|
Earthquake |
A coverage move used to help deal with Steel-types that resist Dragon and Normal. |
|
Tailwind |
If you don't need Haze as much, then you can opt for Tailwind instead for Speed control. |
|
Air Slash |
Dragonite's strongest physical Flying attack without other gimmicks. |
|
Low Kick |
Coverage move to help deal with Steel-types. |
|
Dragon Claw |
A more consistent option over Scale Shot while Loaded Dice isn't in the game. When compared to Scale Shot, it's slightly stronger than 3-hits, but weaker than 4-hits. |
| Item: Leftovers | Scale Shot 159 ~ 190 (95.7 ~ 114.4%) 91.7% Chance to OHKO Doesn't account for Stamina Defense boosts |
| Item: Crabominite | Iron First Boosted Ice Hammer 270 ~ 320 (136.3 ~ 161.6%) Guaranteed OHKO through Multiscale |

|---|---|
| Counter with a Fast Physical Attacker | The scary thing about a physical Dragonite is that it will continously boost its Speed whenever it uses Scale Shot. Thankfully, it also drops its Defense when doing this, so it's highly recommended to counter them with a physical attacking Ice, Rock, Dragon, or Fairy-type. |
| Set Up Stealth Rocks | For Single Battles, it's very important to set up Stealth Rocks to counter Pokemon like Dragonite. This way, Multiscale is broken as soon as it switches in, allowing you to outright KO it with a faster Pokemon. |
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Break Multiscale with Fake Out or Multi-Hit Moves | Dragonites most common ability will be Multiscale, since it makes them extremely difficult to one-shot. If you want to get rid of them quickly, then you can break Multiscale with Fake Out or multi-hit moves, like Triple Axel. |
| Target Its 4x Ice Weakness | Dragonite has a crippling weakness to Ice, but Multiscale generally allows it to live through a 4x weak Ice attack. Even though, it's still recommended to use Ice moves since it will deal a ton of damage, and other Pokemon can kill it with a follow up attack. |
The ability Multiscale is what makes Dragonite really hard to remove from battle, so it's paramount to land some damage early to KO it with a follow-up attack afterwards. In Doubles, moves like Fake Out are amazing for this, but in Singles, you will need to use multi-hit moves if you want to knock it out in one turn.
Multiscale Effect and Pokemon With This Ability
Since there's no Terastallization yet, Dragonite cannot escape its 4x weakness to Ice. Ideally, you will want to use multi-hit moves like Icicle Spear or Triple Axel so that you're guaranteed to take it down in one hit.
Also, as a note, most Ice attacks deal a ton of damage through Multiscale, but they generally don't manage to OHKO Dragonite. However, Mega Crabominable can OHKO it with a max Attack Ice Hammer, even through Multiscale!

This sample team uses a combination of Mega Starmie, Kingambit, and Dragonite to cover for each other's weaknesses. It's very important that you have a Pokemon with a move the clears hazards; otherwise, Dragonite might get one-shot if Multiscale is broken by Stealth Rocks.

This sample team uses Rain to enable Mega Dragonite to use 100% accurate Hurricanes and Thunders, if it's used as a coverage move. Aside from that, Politoed is the Rain setter of choice due to its supportive options, while Archaludon and Basculegion provide extra offensive pressure under the Rain.
