Items that generally increase your Pokemon's stats or restore their health through battle are always recommended for them to hold. Focus Sash, Choice Scarf, and Leftovers are very viable when it comes to the meta aspect of Ranked Battles, which earns them the SS Rank.
Mega Stones are also part of the SS Rank, given that they can come in clutch during battles when you need an overall stat boost.
Type-Boosting Items are viable options, but their utility is less sought out when compared to the other items on the Tier List. This places them on the B Rank in the tier list.
Make sure to establish the roles of your Pokemon in your team, and determine whether they should equip items that increase stats for your offensive Pokemon or items that offer survivability for your defensive Pokemon such as Sitrus Berry or Leftovers.

You can try checking the Battle Data in the main menu to see what Items are being used during Ranked Battles. Once you've selected the Pokemon in the menu, check the Held Items tab to use as reference for the Items you want your Pokemon to hold.
Ranked Battles Guide: All Ranks and Rewards
It is generally recommended to use Items for your Pokemon that play to their strengths, meaning that your offensive Pokemon should use stat-boosting items while your defensive Pokemon equip items that withstand opposing attacks or gradually restore health.
Items can often come in clutch during battles, given that Pokemon like Garchomp with Choice Scarf paired with Outrage can still be defeated if your Pokemon happens to wear Focus Sash and execute a powerful a counterattack.
This proves that items can greatly influence momentum during battles and provide opportunities for a counterattack.

Items cannot be held by more than one Pokemon in your team, meaning that Chilan Berry or Choice Scarf can only be used by one Pokemon in your team. You will need at least six different items so that each member of your Pokemon team has an item.
Consumable items such as berries are restored after the battle is over, so players will not have to worry about losing items after usage.
