Aura and Pulse Moves are mostly special attacks with the added bonus of providing additional effects that make them much more dangerous to opposing Pokemon. The effects usually vary from flinching the opponent, healing the target, or providing perfect accuracy to attacks.
Aura and Pulse Moves gain a significant advantage when paired with a Pokemon that has the Mega Launcher ability, as any Aura and Pulse Move is strengthened and becomes a much stronger attack.
