Sneasler is one of the strongest Pokemon in the current meta due to its typing and ability to outspeed Pokemon with Unburden. It's also a threat in both Singles and Double Battles, making it a Pokemon you'll want in your Boxes at all times.
Unburden Effect and Pokemon With This Ability
As of now, Sneasler is somewhat limited by the choice of items it can hold to activate Unburden. While items like White Herb and Focus Sash are mainstays, other items like the Terrain Seeds aren't in the game yet, which in turn limits the build and EV spreads that Sneasler can use.

This is a standard Sneasler set that aims to get rid of its held item and double its Speed with Unburden. It then becomes a fast and threatening Physical attacker, capable of taking out opponents with powerful STAB attacks.
| Stats | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Jolly Nature 2 HP / 32 Atk / 32 Spe |
If you need Sneasler to naturally outspeed Pokemon with Unburden active, you can opt to go for Jolly instead of Adamant. However, this will lower its damage output, and it's generally not recommended unless you know what you're doing. |
| Adamant Nature 32 HP / 32 Atk / 2 Def or Spe |
A bulkier set useful to help Sneasler stay alive. Even without the Speed investment, Sneasler should still outspeed most Pokemon with Unburden. However, consider bringing extra Speed control on your team just in case. |
| Item | Explanation |
|
Focus Sash If the holder has full HP and takes damage from a move that would knock it out in one hit, it will endure the hit with 1 HP. Disappears for the duration of the battle after a single use.
|
Another powerful item that helps activate Unburden. If you're using this, make sure Sneasler has no investment in bulk so that it increases the chances of taking enough damage for Focus Sash to activate. However, as a note, this is generally better used on other Pokemon on the team since there's still a limited amount of held items available to use. |
|
Sitrus Berry Restores 1/4 of the holder's max HP when the holder's HP drops to 1/2 or less of its max. Disappears for the duration of the battle after a single use.
|
Sitrus Berry is an item that will almost guarantee to be consumed and activate Unburden. Just avoid getting one-shot since you'll get KO'd before Sneasler has a chance to eat the berry. Similar to Focus Sash, this is generally better used on bulkier Pokemon on your team since there's still a limited amount of held items available to use. |
| Ability | Explanation |
|
Pressure Pressure Puts other Pokémon under pressure, causing them to expend more PP to use their moves.
|
On the off chance you're using a held item that you want to keep held, you can opt to use Pressure instead. This way, you can chip away at moves with low PP whenever your opponent uses them, making moves like Protect run out faster the longer the battle goes. |
| Moves | Explanation |
|
Throat Chop |
A strong option, especially in singles, since it gives a Sneasler a good attacking option against Poison and Ghost types. |
|
Coaching |
Can be used over Fake Out in doubles to increase the Attack and Defense of Sneasler's ally. |
|
U-turn |
A staple option for Singles to help pivot out of bad matchups, especially against Psychic types. |
| Item: Sitrus Berry | Close Combat 204 ~ 240 (103 ~ 121.2%) Guaranteed OHKO Note: No Attack drop from Intimidate because of White Herb. |
| Item: Choice Scarf | Stomping Tantrum 194 ~ 230 (124.3 ~ 147.4%) Guaranteed OHKO |
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Control the Speed | Once Sneasler looses its held item, it becomes one of the fastest Pokemon in the game with Unburden. To help keep it in check, make sure you have moves like Tailwind, Icy Wind, or even Sticky Web to help control the Speed tiers. Also, applying Paralysis with moves like Thunder Wave reduces a Pokemon's Speed, but you won't be able to put it to Sleep or Burn it afterwards. |
| Reduce Sneasler's Attack | If you can't deal with Sneasler's Speed, you can always look to reduce their Attack instead. It's always great to use an Intimidate Pokemon against a Physical Attacker, or you can look to Burn it with moves like Will-O-Wisp instead. |
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Use an Aegislash | Similar to Gholdengo, who isn't in the game yet, Aegislash is completely immune to both of Sneasler's STABs thanks to its Steel and Ghost typing. Standard sets of Dire Claw and Close Combat won't be able to touch Aegislash, and the Sneasler will be forced to either switch out or focus on something else if it's a Double Battle. |
| Target its 4x Psychic Weakness | While there's no Terastalization yet, the only way for Sneasler to escape getting OHKO'd by Psychic attacks is by using either a Focus Sash or a Payapa Berry, with the latter not being an ideal held item. This means that as long as you have a Psychic attacker, you should aim to exploit Sneasler's 4x weakness. |
Unless Sneasler is running an alternate set with a coverage move, Aegislash is fully immune to both of Sneasler's STAB attacks. This means that you'll know for sure that the Sneasler can't do anything to it, but remember to be careful if you're the Aegislash player, since you might not know all 4 of its moves yet.
Aegislash Stats, Moves, and How to Get Fast
One of Sneasler's biggest weaknesses is Psychic attacks, since both Poison and Fighting make it take 4x damage. It's almost impossible not to run into a Psychic-type, since Pokemon like Mega Delphox is a threat in Singles, while Farigiraf is a cornerstone to the Trick Room strategy in Doubles.
As a note, Sneasler is also weak to the common Flying and Ground threats in the current meta, like Hurricane Mega Dragonite and Choice Scarf Garchomp. Even if you don't have Psychic-types on your team, there are still other options to quickly take down Sneasler.

This is a sample team that uses Sneasler to help round out the party and counter some of the defensive checks to the rest of the team. Just note that this setup won't work as well against some opponents, like Garchomp teams, and a fourth of Basculegion or Sinistcha may be better instead.
Also, as a note, you can opt to use Pelipper instead of Politoed as the Rain Setter. Politoed is better as a support, which is needed if an Offensive Sneasler is the last Pokemon, while Pelipper offers more offense options.
