Best Equipment for Arch-Tempered Lunastra

Best Weapons

Ice Weapons Ice is the most effective weapon to use against AT Lunastra. Despite having the fire element, water isn't that good against her.
Blades with Long Reach Weapons like the Longsword is particularly good against Lunastra. Her vulnerable parts moves alot and is hard to reach (wings, tail) so having a blade weapon with a long reach is recommended.

Best Skills

Heat Guard Protects you from the DOT damage that Lunastra emits (can also be bypassed by Cool Drink making this optional)
Fire Resist The higher your fire resistance, the better. AT Lunastra's damage comes from fire attacks.
Windproof
Minimum Level 5 Needed
Windproof is a great QOL skill against AT Lunastra. It prevents Lunastra from knocking you back when it uses its hellfire which allows you to dodge the majority of its damage.
Nullify Wind Pressure Alternatively, you can get a 3 piece Kushala set to get the Kushala Daora Flight secret which nullifies all wind pressures.
Health Regen Augment/Nergigante Ambition Slot in some healing to counter Lunastra's DPS. It also removes some need to unsheathe your weapon to heal and thus, improving DPS.
Health Boost More HP

Sample Armor Loadout

With the Iceborne expansion, many armor in MR rank is now capable of dealing with Arch-Tempered Lunastra. Below will be a sample armor loadout that attempts to get the majority of the needed skills to counter AT Lunastra as well as normal Lunastras for HR and MR quests.

Handicraft 2 Evade Window 1
hunter guide While there are some unnecessary skills mixed in, this is a standard Ruiner Nergi/Kushala armor combo to obtain the wind pressure nullification while also obtaining health regen for the Ruiner Nergi set. It lacks affinity for critical strikes so you'll have to rely on the Great Sword's high damage output for DPS. It comes with other QOL skills like Ice Attack, Fire Resist, and Health Boost to survive Lunastra's fire attacks.

Best Palico/Felyne Skills, Gadgets, and Weapons

Felyne Insurance/Safeguard If you're having trouble with Lunastra, chances are you'll get carted. Having more lives means more fighting chance against the blue Elder Dragon.
Felyne Baan Ball Alpha + While the Lunastra is resistant to status ailments, having even just one sleep from your Palico is huge against her.
Vigorwasp Spray More healing to counter Lunastra's damage.
Meowlotov Cocktail Swap this in after Vigorwasp has used its revive to maximize your palico gadget's effects (vigorwasp with only 2 abilities is not that worth it unless you really need the healing)

Best Mantles

Temporal Mantle Easy dodges and keeps you in tip top form. Won't be able to dodge some DoTs so it's not as recommended as the other mantles mentioned.
Fireproof Mantle Negates most of Lunastra's damage.
Rocksteady Mantle If you don't have the ability to negate Lunastra's wind pressure, bringing rocksteady together with Fireproof may just save your life. When Lunastra uses its Hellfire, keep on superman diving to negate mostof its damage then pop an astera jerky to return to full health.

Best Items to Bring

Max / Ancient Potion For instant full healing.
Mega Potion x10 More Healing
Cool Drink Negates Lunastra's aura damage.
Astera Jerky Allows you to instantly heal AT Lunastra's Hellfire attack (if you survived).

How to Beat Arch-Tempered Lunastra

Things You Should Know in Advance

・Wind Resistance can be good against Hellflare
・Fire Resistance is strongly recommended
・Use a Cool Drink before initiating the fight

Max Health and Fire Resistance

Most of Arch-Tempered Lunastra's attacks can be pretty strong. It is recommended that you increase your max health and equip gears with high Fire Resistance to increase your chances of winning the fight.

If you are still having a hard time clearing the hunt, you can also add skills such as Stun Resistance or Evade Window to further increase your survivability.

Wind Pressure From Hellflare

Hellflare has an additional wind pressure effect that can stagger you making it harder for you to get away. You can negate this effect by simply wearing gears that can give you level 5 Windproof or get the armor set bonus Kushala Daora Flight from the Kushala set piece.

Cool Drink and Extreme Heat

You will constantly take damage from the environment due to the extreme heat. Prevent this by using a Cool Drink before entering areas with extreme heat.

Avoid Using Flash Pods

Using a Flash Pod will only anger Arch-Tempered Lunastra even more and has a chance to make Arch-Tempered Lunastra perform the Hellflare attack. This can be useful if you are playing solo. However, if you are playing in multiplayer, it might be better to not use Flash Pods at all since it can endanger other hunters in your party.

Use Elderseal Weapons

Normal Blue Flame

It is possible to suppress the fire and dust surrounding Arch-Tempered Lunastra when he is enraged by using a weapon with an Elderseal.

Hellflare

Arch-Tempered Lunastra Hellfire.gif
Hellflare is one of Arch-Tempered Lunastra's most powerful attack. This causes a big explosion setting a large area on fire with high wind pressure. The high wind pressure can disable your movement making it difficult for you to move away.

Hellflare's windpressure can be negated by the Rocksteady Mantle or you can just take the brunt of the damage with Fireproof Mantle. The Hellflare will leave several recoverable HP so prepare an Astera Jerky when AT Lunastra uses it.

Gears and Strategies without Windproof

Gear and Strategy Description
Rocksteady Mantle Negates the windpressures from Arch-Tempered Lunastra
Fireproof Mantle Increases your resistance against fire attacks
Farcaster Instantly moves you back to camp
Continuous Rolls Helps you move away from the Hellflare and Supernova

The blue flame that Arch-Tempered Lunastra scatters during the fight can be difficult to deal with if you do not have enough fire resistance. Try to stay away from it or try to lure Arch-Tempered Lunastra away from the blue flame to avoid taking more damage when you are running away from his attacks.

Using a Water Affinity weapon a Crystal Burst on the blue flame can instantly extinguish it. However, this is not recommended since it can deal damage if not approached carefully. Extinguishing the blue flame while fighting Arch-Tempered Lunastra can be difficult. Only use this trick if you have no other option.

Attacking the Rear

The safest place to attack is somewhere near the hind legs. If you manage to deal enough damage on this area, this can also down Arch-Tempered Lunastra for a few seconds. Also, staying near the hind legs will help you avoid most of the high damaging attacks like bite and flame breath.

Dealing with the Supernova

How to Beat - Arch-Tempered Lunastra 5.png
When Arch-Tempered Lunastra and Teostra are together, they can initiate their special move called the Supernova. This powerful move can instantly kill you if you are within its large area of effect.

It is best to try and kill one of them before they can group up. This will not only stop them from using the Supernova but it can also lessen the flames you have to deal with. If this is not possible, try to lure them away from each other. Keep in mind that Dung Pods do not work against them, you have to enrage one of them to lure them out of the area.

Know Your Targets

Blunt weapons are particularly effective against the head while bladed weapons are more effective against its wings. Make sure to know what your target it when Lunastra is downed.
