How to Break Monster Parts

Target the Monster's Breakable Parts

Monster Hunter Now - Break Monster Parts
To target a monster's breakable part, simply aim at the desired area and focus on hitting it during your hunts. Dealing damage to these parts will eventually trigger a break, allowing you to attack the monster without getting countered.

Certain Monster Parts Can Only Break on Specific Damage Types

When breaking monster parts, keep in mind that not all weapons can help you trigger part breaks. Some parts will only break based on the damage type dealt to them. For example, if a monster's tail is a weak spot, using long swords for sever damage would be ideal.

When targeting specific monster parts to break, use skills like Lock On to effectively hit and focus on one spot. The Kulu Headpiece is the earliest armor piece that can provide you with this skill. So, if you can't unlock or forge the other armor pieces yet, consider this one instead.

How to Lock On

Use Weakness Exploit for Extra Damage

As you progress to higher levels, you'll gain access to armor pieces with Weakness Exploit. This skill increases your affinity when targeting a weak spot, and with higher affinity, you can land critical hits, which can speed up part breaks!

Many of these pieces belong to the Rathalos Armor Set, so consider hunting plenty of Rathalos once you've unlocked it.

Use Partbreaker for More Part Break Damage

You can also mix up your armor set with some pieces from the Diablos set. This grants you access to the Partbreaker skill, which helps break parts efficiently.

Keep in mind, however, that the extra damage applies only to the health of the monster part, not the total health points of the monster. So, equipping this doesn't necessarily mean that all hunts will be fast.

Benefits of Breaking Monster Parts

Gain Extra Rewards

Monster Hunter Now - Broken Part Reward
When you break monster parts, you receive additional monster materials after the hunt. It's a great way to maximize your rewards, especially when you're farming for Monster Materials.

Extra Monster Materials are Random

Keep in mind that the additional monster materials you receive are still random. So, if you manage to break a Kulu-Ya-Ku's head, your chances of getting a Kulu-Ya-Ku Beak are just as high as getting an extra Kulu-Ya-Ku Scale or Kulu-Ya-Ku Hide.

Stagger Monsters

Breaking monster parts is also a good way to disable monsters from attacking you. This is particularly helpful when you're facing a monster of higher difficulty. If you're having a hard time defeating these monsters, try focusing on breakable monster parts as a strategy.
