The Light Bowgun is one of the two ranged weapons in Monster Hunter Now. If you prefer kiting against your enemies and dishing damage from far out, then this weapon is for you!
The Light Bowgun can also shoot different ammo types, similar to how it was in the base game. The major difference is the ammo type changes whenever you manually reload. This may cause a problem though, especially with consistency on dealing damage, as you can get a status ammo after a DPS one, for example. Keep that difference in mind whenever you're out hunting.
Different ammo types have different effects and ways to use them effectively. Here's a list of all the ammo types for the Light Bowgun:
Ammo Type | Effect and Uses |
---|---|
Normal / Elemental Ammo | Fires a single projectile that deals either raw or elemental when it hits. Standard ammo with no special effect. |
Pierce / Elemental Piercing Ammo | Fires a single projectile that deals multiple instances of damage as it pierces through the monster. Best used against bigger or longer monsters where this ammo can hit multiple times |
Spread / Elemental Spread Ammo | Fires multiple short-ranged projectiles that deals great damage in close range. Fight monsters in close quarters with this ammo as it is ineffective in longer ranges. |
Sticky / Sticky Elemental Ammo | Fires a projectile that sticks to the monster and then explodes after some time. This explosion also deals stun damage, which can stun the monster if it hits its head. |
Slicing / Slicing Elemental Ammo | Fires a projectile that sticks to the monster and then erupts in an explosion that deals slicing damage. This ammo can cause tails to be severed. |

Using the Light Bowgun is extremely simple. Shoot whenever there's an opening, and evade when the monster is attacking. This weapon is very straightforward, and easy to use!
Each ammo type has a specific range where they deal optimal damage. The Light Bowgun's crosshair displays this optimal range. If the hunter is too far from the monster for the ammo to deal its optimal damage, the crosshair loses the orange ring around it.
Spread ammo has a short optimal range, while sticky and slicing ammo are unaffected by them as the explosion will do the same damage no matter how far the ammo was shot from.
Dodging just in time for the monster's attack instantly reloads the current ammo type for your LBG. This is in contrast to manual reloading, where the ammo type changes! This is very useful if you want to maintain your current ammo type - especially if it's a strong one.
Survival is still the top priority in MHNow, so do not risk it if you cannot time Perfect Dodges properly. Just focus on dishing out consistent damage by shooting and dodging when needed!
Please be careful whenever you are going to manually reload your Light Bowgun. The animation is too long and can leave you open for quite a while.
Make sure to leave an ample space between you and the monster if you're down to your last ammo. This makes sure that your weapon will reload at a safe distance.
The Hunter is invincible while using their SP Skill, so make use of it while the enemy is attacking. This is a really long invincibility frame so make use of it.
The ability to use the Light Bowgun is unlocked once you finish Chapter 2, Part 3 and starting Chapter 3. Depending on how many users are in your area, this could translate to about 3.5 hours of play time outside.
