Great Sword Basic Information

Single Strike King

Monster Hunter Now - Great Sword Guide
The Great Sword is still the same, single strike king we know and love in Monster Hunter Now. The weapon requires high animation commitment though, so timing is everything with this weapon.

Relatively Simple Controls

Monster Hunter Now - Great Sword Guide
Charge your attacks to deal damage - that's basically what the Great Sword is all about. The simple control makes it beginner friendly and at the same time, hard to master.

Charging Attacks is Key

Monster Hunter Now - Great Sword Guide
The entirety of Great Sword's gameplay revolves around trying to land charged attacks on your opponents. It could feel great for some, but clunky for others. You could see your DPS drop substantially if you find yourself missing charged attacks or relying too much on normal attacks.

Charged Slashes

Long press on the screen
If the monster attacks, evade by swiping.
If the monster is idling, continue charging to level 3 and release
Release charge attacks twice to reach True Charged Slash.

The Great Sword specializes with charging a single attack to deal damage in one fell swoop. Always try to charge to maximize the damage dealt against enemies!

Releasing two charge attacks in a row would unlock True Charged Slash enabling the Hunter to land two charged attacks in a row, with the final attack dealing huge damage.

Quick True Charged Slash via Tackles

Long Press ► Tackle ► Long Press ► Tackle ► Long Press ► Release.

This combo provides Hunters a way to reach True Charged Slash the quickest way possible. This does not even need to hit enemies, and can be timed around monster attacks. Try to master this technique!

Tips on How to Use the Great Sword

Summary

Always Hit with Charged Attacks

Always make sure to land those charged attacks against enemies. You will see that your DPS drops if you're not using charged attacks enough, so make sure to time your attacks right!

Target Monster Weakpoints

The Great Sword specializes with landing single, high-damage attacks successfully so aiming for monster weakpoints maximizes that damage! These weakpoints could be hard to hit though, so try to balance if the risk is worth the time. In any case, try dishing out damage on monster weakpoints whenever the monster is down!

How to Break Monster Parts

Always Evade When Necessary

Charging attacks can leave you exposed to monster attacks, so always be observant and evade when necessary! It's almost always not worth it to take damage by risking landing a charged attack.

How to Perfect Dodge

Time Your Tackle with Enemy Attacks

If you're charging and you see an attack coming your way, it may be a good idea to tackle towards the attack! This essentially reduces the damage to 1, so this can save you when in a pinch.

Stun Monsters with Tackle

Tackling deals blunt damage and, therefore, also deals stun damage to monsters when it hits their head! The Lock On skill can be useful to target your tackles to the monster's head and guarantee a charged attack on them once they fall from a stunning hit.

Use SP Skills During Enemy Attacks

The Hunter is invincible while using their SP Skill, so make use of it while the enemy is attacking. This is a really long invincibility frame so make use of it.

List of Special Skills and How to Use

The SP Skill is Better Than its Non-SP Counterpart

The True Charged Slash move can be done by doing three charged slashes in a row or using the SP Skill. The SP skill version of the True Charged Slash deals a bit more damage, gives you invulnerability during the move, and can be accessed anytime as long as your SP bar is filled, making it strictly better than the non-SP skill version.

Great in Multiplayer Setting

The Great Sword could be great when used in a multiplayer environment as there are times when monsters will focus on other Hunters while playing. This could provide an opening for you to charge up and land those powerful moves without worrying about the monster.

How to Unlock the Great Sword

Clear Chapter 2, Part 1

The ability to use the Great Sword is unlocked once you finish Chapter 2, Part 1 and starting Chapter 2, Part 2. Depending on how many users are in your area, this could translate to about 2 hours play time outside.
