What Are Status Ailments?

Status Effects that Hinder Progression

Status Ailments are status effects that can be inflicted on both Hunters and monsters. If Hunters are the ones inflicted, these ailments cause a disadvantage during hunts, making the fight last longer.

List of Status Ailments and Their Effects

Poison, Paralysis, and Sleep are the ailments in-game that have a corresponding elements to them, and are usually caused by large monster encounters such as Pukei-Pukei, Rathian, Great Girros, and Radobaan.

Stun is also a status ailment that hunters can inflict on monsters by dealing blunt damage to their heads. Getting hit multiple times in succession results the hunter into getting Stunned.

Status Ailment Effects
PoisonMonster Hunter Now - Poison Stat Saps health away by a certain amount.
ParalyzeMonster Hunter Now - Paralyze Stat Completely disables the inflicted target for a short amount of time.
Sleep Monster Hunter Now - Sleep Causes the target to enter a deep slumber. The next hit dealt to sleeping monsters gain bonus damage.
Stun Monster Hunter Now - Stun Dazes the target, causing them to temporarily stop in their tracks as they struggle to recover.

How to Inflict Status Ailments

Use Blunt Damage to Stun Monsters

Stun monsters and get an opening by hitting their heads with blunt damage. Most weapons have access to blunt damage that can cause stun, such as the Sword and Shield's shield bashes, the Great Sword's tackles, or the Light Bowgun's sticky ammo.

The most effective weapon type for inflicting stuns is the Hammer, with all of its moves dealing blunt damage.

The Slugger skill increases the effectiveness of your blunt damage hits to cause stun.

Equip Weapons that Inflict Status Ailments

Inflicting Status Ailments on monsters requires Hunters to build up status damage with weapons that inflict Poison and Paralysis. Having skills like Poison Attack and Paralysis Attack make it easier to build up status damage making applying status faster, so consider equipping them during hunts!

Wear Equipment that has Status Ailment Attack

There are skills that increase the build-up of the status ailments. Having more points to these skills makes you inflict status ailments faster, and possibly have you inflict status ailments in a hunt multiple times.

Skill Description
Paralysis Attack Increases weapon's paralysis buildup.
Poison Attack Increases weapon's poison buildup value.
Sleep Attack Increases weapon's sleep buildup.
Slugger Increases stun power.

What to Do When Inflicted with Status Ailments

Heal Up When Poisoned

When inflicted with Poison, if your HP is below 50% heal up using First-Aid Med. Conveniently, the game prioritizes using First-Aid Meds that are available first before queueing up Potions, so make sure to heal up when the health gauge hits below 50%!

Avoid Getting Hit by Perfect Dodging

Hunters get inflicted with Paralysis by large monsters like Great Girros during encounters. Getting paralyzed equates to losing a significant amount of hunting time, so save runs by pulling off Perfect Dodges, breaking monster parts, and land multiple hits on a monster's weak spot to immobilize them instead.

How to Perfect Dodge

Wear Equipment that has Status Ailment Resistance

If a status ailment is making you struggle on a challenging fight, you may consider having skills that grant you resistance, or even immunity, to a status ailment. You can have these skills as you practice and learn how to dodge the attacks of a specific monster.

Status Ailment Resistance Skills

Skill Description
Paralysis Resistance Grants a chance to prevent paralysis status/prevents paralysis.
Poison Resistance Grants a chance to prevent poison status/prevents poisoning.
Sleep Resistance Grants a chance to prevent sleep status/prevents sleep.
