There are a couple of ways of using a Smoke Grenade in the field. You can throw it to the enemy's location to block off their vision and get close to them, or throw it near you and escape the fight. Smoke Grenades are a great tool to push sectors in open areas with little cover.
Smoke Grenades are a good fit for Specialists capable of closing the distance, leaving the scene fast, or who have a visual advantage in the battle, namely Paik, Sundance, and Mackay.
