Dragapult is a versatile attacker that outspeeds even Mega Gengar and Mega Lopunny. By taking advantage of this stat, Dragapult can disrupt opponents with Thunder Wave or Will-O-Wisp before they can act or blitz them with Draco Meteor or Dragon Darts.
Due to its high Speed stat, Dragapult can also set up Light Screen and Reflect to defend against the first few attacks from the opponent. It can then proceed to disrupt the enemy with status conditions or damage them directly with attacks.

Dragapult takes advantage of its Speed by inflicting a status condition using Thunder Wave or Will-O-Wisp on the opponent's attacker. It can also switch in for a surprise attack to finish off low HP targets with Draco Meteor or Hex.
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Use a Magic Guard Clefable | If you've been seeing a lot of Dragapults in your battles, try bringing a Clefable with the Magic Guard Ability, as this completely counters Dragapult's status condition gimmick and can deal super effective STABs. Just make sure Clefable is bulky enough to tank Dragapult's attacks. |
| Use Priority Moves or equip a Choice Scarf | Dragapult's low defensive stats make it an easy target for Priority Moves and Choice Scarf moves that can hit its weaknesses. |
| Tank it with Tyranitar | Dragapult doesn't have anything to counter Tyranitar, and being a bulky attacker, Tyranitar would overwhelm Dragapult regardless of how fast it is. |

Most players who are facing a Dragapult expect a setup with Dragon Darts and status conditions, and will send out Pokemon with high Defense or set up Safeguard and Magic Bounce. A pure special attacker Dragapult would catch them off guard as they wouldn't anticipate direct special attacks right off the bat.
This setup is also great for taking out other Dragon-types as Dragapult can use two full damage Draco Meteors back-to-back, courtesy of White Herb.
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Use Priority Moves or equip a Choice Scarf | Dragapult's low defensive stats make it an easy target for Priority Moves and Choice Scarf moves that can hit its weaknesses. |
| Tank it with Tyranitar | Dragapult doesn't have anything to counter Tyranitar, and being a bulky attacker, Tyranitar would overwhelm Dragapult regardless of how fast it is. |
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Exploit its weakness with a Priority Move | Hitting Dragapult's weakness with Priority Moves will cripple it before it disables your attacker with its status Moves. |
| Launch a surprise attack with Choice Scarf | Dragapult has low durability and can be taken out easily by equipping a Choice Scarf on a Pokemon that can hit Dragapult's weaknesses. |
Using Priority Moves is one way to bypass Dragapult's high Speed. Mimikyu is one of the good Dragapult counters as it has access to Shadow Sneak and can safely take a hit thanks to its Disguise Ability.
Dragapult has low Defense and Sp. Defense stats, which means it can easily be taken out with a hit or two from a strong attacker, especially those that can exploit any of its 5 weaknesses.
Equipping a Choice Scarf on your attacker and launching a surprise attack against the enemy Dragapult would do the trick, and is effective even in Dragapult mirror matches.
