Once Mega Evolved, Starmie becomes the fastest Huge Power Pokemon across the whole series! This makes it an incredibly threatening sweeper, especially against Pokemon slower than it.
As a note, it's tied with Mega Medicham for the second-highest Attack stat Pokemon with Huge/Pure Power, only beaten out by Mega Mawile with a base 105 Attack.
Huge Power Effect and Pokemon With This Ability
Starmie's base and Mega forms both have pretty balanced defenses, meaning you can also invest in HP to make it stick around longer in battles. This is actually preferred against some matchups since there are actually a good number of Pokemon and Megas that have more than 120 base Speed.

This build aims to quickly take down opponents with a combination of Huge Power and STAB Physical attacks. It also utilizes Aqua Jet to get quick KOs on Pokemon that outspeed it, as well as Flip Turn to switch out and get chip damage against bad matchups.
| Stats | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Rash Nature 18 SpA / 14 SpD / 32 Spe |
Helps make Mega Starmie a mixed attacker, potentially surprising foes that expect a full Physical build. |
| Timid Nature 2 HP / 32 SpA / 32 Spe |
Turn it into a full Special attacker to utilize its amazing coverage movepool. |
| Moves | Explanation |
|
Double-Edge |
A powerful Normal-type attack that can be used to nuke down enemies that don't resist it. |
|
Surf |
A Special attacking move to help diversify its damage profile. Just make sure to adjust its stat spread to account for this. |
|
Thunderbolt Ice Beam |
When combined with Surf, it gives Starmie a trio of attacks that no Pokemon can resist. Just make sure to adjust its stat spread to account for this. |
| Item: Charizardite Y | Sun is active, and damage of Water Moves is reduced by 50% Liquidation 150 ~ 176 (98 ~ 115%) 75% Chance to OHKO |
| Item: Black Glasses | Kowtow Cleave 188 ~ 224 (138.2 ~ 164.7%) Guaranteed OHKO Sucker Punch 156 ~ 186 (114.7 ~ 136.7%) Guaranteed OHKO |
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Apply the Burn Status | A great way to counter a fully offensive Mega Starmie is by applying Burn to it. since it will stay even if it switches out. Just make sure to use Pokemon that aren't weak to Water and Psychic, since they can still get KO'd even after a burn. |
| Use a Pokemon with Sucker Punch | Starmie has access to Flip Turn, meaning that it will mostly likely use that instead of manually switching out since it helps apply some chip damage. Considering this, you can use Sucker Punch on powerful Dark-type Pokemon to a land a ton of damage, and maybe even outright KO it! |

Bulk Up |
Recover |
||||||||||
This set takes advantage of Mega Starmie's base 105 Def and SpD to make it as bulky as possible. The combination of Bulk Up and Recover allows Mega Starmie to stay on the field for a long time, as long as the enemy doesn't have easy ways to deal with it.
| Moves | Explanation |
|---|---|
|
Cosmic Power |
Used over Bulk Up to increase both defenses at the cost of no longer being able to boost Attack. |
|
Substitute |
Prevents enemies from countering Starmie with Status moves, but would need to replace either an attacking move or Recover. |
| Item: Charizardite Y | Sun is active, and Mega Starmie is Burned +2 Liquidation 162 ~ 192 (105.8 ~ 125.4%) Guaranteed OHKO |
| Item: Focus Sash | Flower Trick 152 ~ 182 (91 ~ 108.9%) 56.3% Chance to OHKO |
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Use a Fast Taunter | To prevent a bulky Mega Starmie from setting up, you'll want to use Pokemon that have more than 120 base Speed and learn Taunt. Meowscarada is especially good for this since its typing perfectly counters Starmie, and Flower Trick's guaranteed crits bypasses any Defense boosts it manages to set up. |
| Bring a Pokemon with Unaware | A classic counter to setup Pokemon is using a Pokemon with Unaware. This way, it ignores any stat boosts they gain, and you can setup to potentially one shot them in return. |
| Counter | Pokemon | Info |
|---|---|
| Bring Intimidate Pokemon | Since its base special attacking form isn't particularly powerful, it's highly recommended to bring Pokemon with Intimidate to reduce the boost it gets from Huge Power. Just make sure to avoid Fire-types like the Arcanines and Incineroar since they're still weak to Water. |
| Use an Archaludon team | Archaludon is an incredible counter to Starmie since it resists both of its STABs, and Starmie doesn't learn any Fighting or Ground attacks. Just be careful if you decide to activate Rain since it will boost the damage of Starmie's Water-type attacks. |
An amazing way to deal with Mega Starmie is by lowering its Attack with Intimidate. This will help control its overall ridiculous Attack stat, helping keep your team alive when a Pokemon would otherwise get KO'd.
Intimidate Effect and Pokemon With This Ability
If you need a Pokemon to counter Mega Starmie, Archaludon is a perfect pick. Besides its defensive typing perfectly countering Starmie's STABs, its Electro Shot can one-shot even a full HP and SpD invested Mega Starmie!
Just be careful if you do set up Rain since it will boost the damage of Starmie's Water-type attacks, potentially putting any Pokemon besides Archaludon at risk of getting KO'd.
Archaludon Stats, Moves, and How to Get Fast
| Offensive Lead | Bulky Attacker | Sweeper |
|---|---|---|
Sneasler
|
Kingambit
|
Mega Starmie
|
This sample team utilizes Sneasler and Kingambit to get rid of any threats to Mega Starmie. The combination of these Pokémon covers each other's weaknesses very well, except against Ground, Electric, and Fairy attacks.
| Role1 | Role2 |
|---|---|
Mega Starmie
|
Dragapult
|
| Role3 | Role4 |
Maushold
|
Sneasler
|
This team utilizes a more supportive Special attacking Mega Starmie to pass on Huge Power to a fast Physical attacker using Skill Swap. In this example, Dragapult is the sweeper of choice, with Maushold being its main support and Sneasler helping provide offensive coverage.
Mega Starmie can still be an offensive threat on this team, just make sure it's using a Special set with moves like Scald and Ice Beam since it will no longer have the Huge Power Attack boost.
