Destiny: Rising takes place in an alternate non canon timeline that doesn’t affect the official Destiny story. The events, characters, and factions you see in Destiny: Rising are separate from Bungie’s mainline timeline in Destiny 1 and 2.

Because it’s non-canon, lore elements don’t have to match perfectly with established history, and in some cases they even contradict it.

Chronologically, Destiny: Rising is set long before the events of Destiny 1 and 2, during the time after the Collapse when humanity was still recovering and laying the foundations of the Last City.

This makes the game feel like a prequel in setting, but since it’s non-canon, it doesn’t actually lead into or connect with Bungie’s main storyline.

In other words, it’s a standalone alternate reality. You’ll get familiar vibes and early-era themes, but the story paths diverge completely from the main series.
