How to Defeat Cúchulainn

Points to Consider

  • Fought within Garamsythe Waterway
  • Quickening chain prone
  • Casts Malaise, Blight, and Invert
  • Party's HP is constantly drained during the battle
  • Haste, Protect, Regen and Shell are key spells
  • Comes with Foobars
  • Fond of physical attacks

In-Depth Battle Walkthrough

Cuchulainn is fought within the confines of the Garamsythe Waterway, in an area where there are no hidden places. However, he can be beaten pretty easily with a Quickening chain, but only if you break through his defenses. His unique attacks—Malaise and Blight—are nasty ones. The former functions like Drain, while the latter is devastating when combined with the skill Bio. In addition, the party's health is constantly being drained during the battle, so Malaise is just an additional annoyance to an already-lopsided battle. His Invert is particularly devastating. If the party is unprepared, members with low MP stock may be finished off early.

Consider having Haste, Protect, Regen, and Shell ready prior to facing off with Cuchulainn. Party members who have Curaja are also helpful, as the whole party's HP should be kept above 1000 HP. Cuchulainn will also be accompanied by Foobars, so it should be the party's priority to finish off these pesky henchmonsters first. It is fairly easy to counter the esper's Disablega spell if one equips Black Belts quickly or have one party member's Gambit set to cast Esuna on Disabled members.

Cuchulainn will fall pretty easily when constantly under assault. The esper's HP isn't particularly high. Have a Berserker and your Quickening chain at the ready and the esper will be part of your summon party in no time at all.

Cúchulainn - Benefits of Use

Cuchulainn's Bio is especially useful for hard battles and tough bosses because it can cut the enemy's HP in half. He has a bevvy of abilities he unlocks for the user. Red Battlemages and Shikaris stand to gain the most from him, particularly because Red Battlemages become a hybrid with Black Magick spells Firaga, Thundaga, and Blizzaga unlocked, as well as the terribly useful Sleepga. Shikaris gain Shellga, which is actually a big help against heavy magick users. Cuchulainn is also a physical esper in that he uses more physical attacks than Magicks, making the Red Battlemage a priority to partner with him.
