Dragon Quest 1 HD-2D Remake (DQ1)

How to Beat Spiketail

Add to Watchlist

Dragon Quest 1 - Spiketail
Defeat Spiketail using the Swallowtail and Kasizz combo in Dragon Quest 1 HD-2D Remake (DQ1). Read on to learn how to beat the Spiketail, and see an overview of its stats, skills, as well as the best equipment to wear during battle!

How to Beat Spiketail

Aim for Level 33 or Higher

Defeat Monsters At Your Level

It’s recommended to reach Level 32 before fighting Spiketail. You’ll need to learn Kasizz (unlocked at Level 30) to deal effective magic damage during the battle, so leveling up ensures both survivability and offense.

EXP Farm: How to Level Up Fast

Equip the Swallowtail for Multi-Hit Damage

Monarch of Medals

Before heading to Kol, exchange 17 Mini Medals at the Citadel of the Monarch of Medals to obtain the Swallowtail.

This weapon can hit multiple enemies per attack, making it perfect for clearing Spiketail’s summoned allies.

All 40 Mini Medal Locations and Rewards

Prepare for Fire and Ice Damage

Dragon Mail

Spiketail frequently uses Fire and Ice Breath attacks, so gear up with equipment that reduce those elements.

Both the Dragon Mail and Dragon Shield grant resistance to fire and ice, significantly cutting down incoming damage.

List of All Equipment

Always Cast Wild Side For Multiple Attacks

Casting Wild Side at the start of battle lets you attack twice per turn, massively boosting your damage output.

Keep it active throughout the fight to quickly take down Spiketail and its allies before they can overwhelm you.

Alternate Between Kasizz and Physical Attacks

Use Swallowtail to handle the smaller enemies when they appear, and switch to Kasizz or Dragon Slash when Spiketail is alone. If you’re running low on MP, rely on Dragon Slash instead of Kasizz to conserve resources, it still deals good single-target damage.

Repeat the cycle and eventually you'll memorize Spiketail's attack pattern and you'll know what to do next.
