Towns vs Dungeons

Towns are Safe, Dungeons are Dangerous

The difference between towns and dungeons in Dragon Quest 1 is that towns are safe areas where you can rest and prepare, while dungeons are typically filled with monsters.

Also, outside of the optional ones, dungeons are a way to check if you're strong enough to proceed with the game's story since they're normally used to either progress to a higher level area, or they contain a key item that's required for the story.
