You will respawn wherever you last saved and lose half of your gold when you die in the Dragon Quest 1 HD-2D Remake (DQ1). See what happens when you're character is knocked out here.

What Happens When You Die?

Respawn at Your Last Save Area

Death Penalty
Whenever you die in battle, you will respawn at full HP and MP wherever you last made a save. You won't be taken back in time to that point, and you'll get to keep any EXP or items you've gained if you choose to revive at a Church.

However, if you do this, you will end up losing half of your gold as a penalty. In case you're about to face tough enemies or a boss, it's recommended to store your money in a bank to prevent losing gold in case you die.

Load Saves to Keep Gold and Previous EXP

If you don't want to lose your Gold, you can opt to revive at your last auto or manual save. However, you will lose all your EXP gained since your last save, so this should only do this if you haven't been grinding or farming EXP.

No Way to Revive the Hero

Since you only control one character in Dragon Quest 1, you won't be able to revive the Hero in battle. Also, as of now, there has been no discovery on whether or not this has changed in the HD-2D Remake of the game.
