How to Get Critical Hits
Increase Your Luck
Critical Hits are fundamentally chance-based in most circumstances. This means there are few ways to guarantee a critical hit. However, the Hero's critical chance is influenced by certain stats and gear, chief among them the Luck Stat. A higher Luck stat won't guarantee you will crit, but it will increase their frequency over time.
The easiest way to increase Luck is by consuming Seeds of Luck. These can be found all over Alefgard and will increase your stats by a small amount each time. You will also get a natural increase to Luck whenever you level up, improving your crit chance in general.

Some equipment items also increase your Luck stat. Wearing them grants you an effective increase to crit chance, in addition to various other benefits related to luck.
Equip High-Crit Weapons

Tantegel Castle |
Though rare, some weapons have a higher-than-average critical chance, making crits more likely when using them, though they have their own drawbacks.
Sword of Ruin is Cursed
The Sword of Ruin also has a high crit chance, but since it is a piece of cursed equipment, the incoming crit chance is also increased for you! We recommend not equipping it at all.

Headsman's Axe is Missable on True Ending
Unfortunately for collectors and crit-hungry heroes, the high-crit Headsman's Axe weapon is locked behind a door inside Tantegel Castle that requires the Ultimate Key to unlock.
This means that if you are pursuing the True Ending and are avoiding Tantegel Castle to prevent the Princess from returning there, you cannot get the Headsman's Axe or any other treasure behind that locked door. This is a small price to pay for the Princess' companionship, though.

Use the Sun Sigil
In Dragon Quest 1 HD-2D Remake, the Sun Sigil now has its own effect in battle that the Hero can use. When activated, the Sun Sigil allows even abilities to land critical hits, and vastly increases your crit chance temporarily. This is one way to reliably increase the chance of crits in key battles!

What is a Critical Hit?
Extra Damage That Ignores Defence
A critical hit is basically a regular attack that deals more damage than normal, and it also ignores the target's Defence stat. However, this only applies to physical attacks, meaning that magical spells cannot critically hit.
Instantly Kills Metal Slimes
The biggest thing to note is that critical hits are guaranteed to kill Metal Slimes if they hit. This is because they have very high defence and low HP, and crits will ignore their ridiculous defence.
