The Hero can buy equipment at the various stores located in Alefgard's towns. Towns typically stock a selection of diffferent weapons, armor, and accessory options, but all require Gold earned from battle and exploration.

Find in Treasure Chests
Treasure chests found in while exploring dungeons and other locations will also hold equipment. Some will be the same as can be bought in stores but others can be rare gear that can't be found anywhere else!
Receive from Sparkly Spots
Sparkly Spots found around the overworld map can reward the Hero with equipment, free of charge. Finding gear from Sparkly Spots can help mitigate the cost of buying gear from stores and help the Hero save up for the most powerful or useful items.
Defeat Enemies
Certain equipment can only be obtained by defeating specific enemies. These enemies are harder to beat and requires you to have a high level and equip better gear.

Increases Hero's Attack and Defense
Key to keeping the Hero alive along his journey, the equipment of Dragon Quest 1 fills five slots: Weapon, Shield, Armor, Headgear, and Accessory. All equipment contributes to character stats like Attack and Defence while Accesories can add to specific stats like Strength or Resilience.
Ensure that your equipment is updated to tackle the most powerful threats.
