How to Get Sunstone
First Acquire the Magic Key From Rimuldar
You can get the Magic Key by first heading to Rimuldar, which is positioned east of the map. Once you've entered the town, a cutscene will play out showing the Captain of the Guard falling ill.
You will be required to ask the aid of the Warlock of Doorlocks to help rin of the Captain's illness. Once you have completed his requests and completed a set of tasks, the warlock will give you the Magic Key.

Once you've acquired the Magic Key, you can head towards the Sunstone's location by talking to the Sage in Tantegel Castle's basement on the lower right side of the castle garden.
Head to the back of the castle and go outside. From there, go right then south down the stairs to reach the castle's basement level. Speak to the Sage here and he'll give you the Sunstone.

Get the Sunstone Before Rescuing the Princess
It's highly recommended to get the Sunstone first before heading to Quagmire Cave to rescue Princess Gwaelin. This way, you can take her with you for the rest of your journey, allowing her to support you during battle.

The Sunstone is one of the items needed to acquire the Rainbow Drop at the Sanctum. Once you've acquired the Sunstone, Staff of Rain, and Mark of Erdrick, you will be given the Rainbow Drop from the sage that resides at the Sanctum.
The Rainbow Drop will allow you access to the final dungeon of the game, which is the Dragonlord's Castle. This item is pivotal in finishing the main story of the game.
