Becoming a captain in Sea of Thieves allows you to buy, name, and customize your very own ship. Read on to learn more about Captaincy including how to buy your own ship, how to become a captain, and the perks of being one!
List of Contents
The ships you were sailing with when you first started playing Sea of Thieves aren't really ships that you own. They don't have their own names and the ship's appearance resets each time you start a new session. A proper ship has it's own name and, of course, it's very own captain.
# | How to Buy a Ship |
---|---|
1 | You can buy a ship by clicking on the My Ships menu option when selecting a ship type in High Seas. |
2 | Press the keybind/controller button to purchase a ship and you will be given an option to select a ship type to buy. |
Ships can be bought on the main menu after selecting Adventure Mode in High Seas before going into a game session. Captained ships can only be used in High Seas and cannot be used in Safer Seas mode.
Buying a ship will allow the player to be the captain of their own ship. You will need lots of gold to buy a ship and the cost depends on what type of ship you buy. The bigger ones cost more.
Type | Crew Size | Cost (Gold) |
---|---|---|
Sloop | 1 - 2 | 250,000 |
Brigantine | 2 - 3 | 375,000 |
Galleon | 3 - 4 | 500,000 |
You can own multiple ships but buying another ship of the same type will require you to earn a Legendary Ship Title on the previous one.
When you buy a ship, you will be given a chance to name it. The name will appear on the ship's crest in-game and will be a unique identifier for the ship. The ship must abide by the following requirements:
Just like your character name, renaming your ship later on will come with a cost. Be sure to pick a name you really like since you will have to buy a Ship Renaming Deed from the Pirate Emporium for 499 Ancient Coins to rename your ship.
Extra customization options are available for captained ships, these are called Decorations and Trinkets. Ship decorations include the captain's table, bed, drapes, rug, the ship's crest and banners. Trinkets are a variety of objects you can place at specific locations on the ship to add flavor and personality.
Cosmetics can be saved and kept between sessions via an option at the Ship Customization Chest. You can do this for all options including the hull, sails, wheel, figurehead, cannons, capstan, decorations, and trinkets. You will need to individually save each part.
The captain and the crew can purchase supplies for the ship from the Shipwright Shop. These supplies will automatically go to the ship's barrels. You can buy wood, cannonballs, throwables, fruits, meat, and bait.
# | How to Restore Ship |
---|---|
1A | You can restore your ship via an option on the main menu when selecting your ship before going into the game. |
1B | You can also talk to the NPC at the Shipwright Shop to restore your ship. |
2 | Restoring your ship will cost gold depending on the damages your ship has suffered. |
Damage to the ship, even when repaired, leaves a cosmetic mark behind such as wooden planks left on holes and burn marks on the deck. These marks are kept between sessions but are purely cosmetic and have no negative effects.
However, you can pay gold to restore your ship to pristine condition removing all the damage and battle scars. This will also repair any damage on your ship left unrepaired including holes and water in the hull, broken masts, wheels, and capstans. This can be done at the Shipwright or on the menu when choosing your ship.
Sovereigns are NPCs located on outposts who can accept any treasure from a captain and their crew and distribute it to the appropriate Trading Companies without having to bring the treasure to them individually. This lets you sell your treasure much quicker by only having to bring them to one NPC.
Sovereigns can only deliver to companies located on outposts which means they cannot deliver to Reaper's Bones. They can deliver to the Hunter's Call but with a gold penalty.
Captained ships will have Ship Milestones to go for which increase in Class depending on the type of activity you accomplish with the ship. This tracks almost any activity you do in the Sea of Thieves separated into various categories.
Reaching Class 50 in one category of ship milestones earns you a Legendary Ship Title and allows you to buy another ship of the same type.
