Ashen Chests are obtained by taking part in the Skeleton Fort and Skeleton Fleet World Events, or by defeating Ashen Guardians and Ashen Lords in Sea of Thieves. Learn how to get Ashen Chests and how to open Ashen Chests in this guide!

Defeat a Skeleton Captain Ship During the Skeleton Fleet World Event
On the third and final wave of the Skeleton Fleet World Event, a ship with a Skeleton Captain will appear. Defeating the Skeleton Captain Ship is guaranteed to drop at least two Ashen Chests. The loot floats around the area where the skeleton ship sank so be sure to check around.
The Skeleton Fleet event is indicated by a cloud in the shape of a ship in the sky when active.
All World Events and Encounters
Obtain from Skeleton Fort World Event
The vault at the end of the Skeleton Fort World Event contains one guaranteed Ashen Chest. The event is indicated by a large skull cloud with green eyes in the sky when active.

Reward From Ashen Guardian's Notes
Ashen Guardian's Notes drop from Ashen Guardians that appear during the Skeleton Fort World Event or spawn randomly on islands. These notes give you a quest that lead you to one guaranteed Ashen Chest when solved.
Notes from Ashen Guardians During the Skeleton Fort World Event
The notes that drop from Ashen Guardians at a Skeleton Fort event lead to an Ashen Chest buried on the same fort. Be sure to dig it up before leaving.
Possible Drop from Ashen Lords During the Ashen Winds World Event
Ashen Lords have a chance to drop Ashen Chests along with a handful of other rewards when defeated. Ashen Chests obtained this way are already unlocked and do not require an Ashen Key to open.
Ashen Lords can be found and fought during the Ashen Winds World Event, indicated by a red tornado in the sky when active.
How to Open Ashen Chests
Use an Ashen Key to Unlock the Chest
Ashen Chests can be unlocked with the use of Ashen Keys. These keys can be obtained from the same methods you use for Ashen Chests, namely: the Skeleton Fleet and Skeleton Fort world events, defeating Ashen Key Masters and Ashen Guardians, and possibly from fishing!
What are Ashen Chests?
Chests Containing an Ashen Tome
Ashen Chests are locked chests containing one guaranteed Ashen Tome and two other valuables. Just like other container chests, Ashen Chests can be used to place three small treasure items inside for transportation.
