Sea of Thieves - Ashen Winds

Ashen Winds is a World Event in Sea of Thieves indicated by a red tornado hovering over a large island. Read on to find out how to find and start Ashen Winds events, how to beat an Ashen Lord, the commendations, and the rewards you get for completing them!

How to Start Ashen Winds

Starts When a Red Tornado Appears

Sea of Thieves - Red Tornado

The Ashen Winds is an event that takes place on one of the large islands in the Sea of Thieves and is visibly indicated by a red tornado hovering above said island.

When you see a red tornado on the horizon, it means that the Ashen Skeletons are performing a ritual to summon one of the four Ashen Lords on the island. Land on the island and approach the skeletons to fight an Ashen Lord.

Ashen Winds are Available in Safer Seas and High Seas

Sea of Thieves - Safer Seas

Ashen Winds World Events can appear even if the player opts to play in Safer Seas. However, we generally recommend to not try this event alone and bring some friends with you as the Ashen Lord and loot transfer is easier when playing with a group.

Note that in Safer Seas, you will get less gold for turning in treasure than when playing in High Seas. However, you'll be safer while transporting your loot compared to High Seas where other players can fight you for your Ashen Winds loot.

High Seas vs. Safer Seas

Fight the Ashen Lord Upon Starting the Event

Once you arrive at the location of an Ashen Winds world event, you will see Ashen Skeletons performing a ritual where they summon one of the four Ashen Lords.

The Ashen Lord summoned is the boss for the event and will be difficult to fight while playing solo. We recommend playing with friends to tackle this challenge.

All Ashen Lords

All Four Ashen Lords
• Captain Grimm
• Red Ruth
• Old Horatio
• Warden Chi

There are four different Ashen Lords that you can fight within Sea of Thieves but you can only fight one of them while doing the event. The Ashen Lord that'll be summoned in the event is random, but no matter which one you fight, they all share the same moveset.

How to Beat an Ashen Lord

How to Beat an Ashen Lord

Keep Moving to Avoid Fireball Attacks

Sea of Thieves - Fireball

A lot of the Ashen Lord's attacks will be fire attacks. During the starting phases, make sure to keep moving around in order to dodge the Ashen Lord's fireball attacks. You'll know it's about to hurl a fireball when it conjures one in its hand.

Deal with the Skeleton Summons First

Sea of Thieves - Skeleton Minion

Similar to most Skeleton bosses, the Ashen Lord will also periodically summon other skeletons to help it during the fight. Use a sword or a blunderbuss to quickly get rid of them. Make sure to target them first to avoid getting mobbed.

If you're playing solo, consider learning how to do a Sword Lunge since it's one of the easiest melee attacks you can do to avoid getting mobbed by skeleton minions.

Use the Flintlock over the Blunderbuss if You Want to Play Safe

Again, if you're playing solo and want to avoid dying as much as possible, we recommend using the Flintlock instead of the Blunderbuss so that you can keep your distance without having to sacrifice mobility during the fight.

Keep the Ashen Lord in Sight When it Summons Fog

Sea of Thieves - Ashen Lord Fog

Similar to its raise skeleton move, the Ashen Lord will also periodically cover the island in dense fog, lowering visibility and turning everything monochrome. Try not to lose sight of the Ashen Lord when it does this move so you know the type of attack he's about to use.

Move to a Safe Position When Ashen Lord Does Flame Breath

Sea of Thieves - Flame Breath

The Ashen Lord can also use a Flame Breath when you are close to them. This one is highly telegraphed so make sure to avoid staying in front of them once the animation starts. You can move to a safe position or stay beside/behind them to keep attacking.

Use the Blunderbuss While the Ashen Lord is Charging Up

During the second phase, the Ashen Lord will gain access to its shockwave attack that can knock you back. While powerful, it has a long wind up before the Ashen Lord performs the attack.

Take advantage of the wind up time and Shoot them with a Blunderbuss while they are charging up. However, after getting your shot off, back off as getting too close will ignite you.

The shockwave attack will also deal more damage during the final phase of the fight. We suggest fighting them near the sea, so that you'll land on the water after getting knocked back.

Avoid the Water During Volcanic Eruption

The Volcanic Eruption ability is dangerous as it is a non stop barrage of volcanic eruptions while the Ashen Lord does its Flame Breath move. Similar to the volcanoes in Devil's Roar, this attack boils the water around the Ashen Lord, damaging anything walking or swimming in it.

We recommend staying away from the Ashen Lord and the surrounding water while they are performing this attack. Maintain your distance and use your guns to deal damage until the move ends.

Additionally, make sure to lure the Ashen Lord away from your ship especially as a solo player, since the projectiles flung during this attack can hit your ship and create holes in it.

Stay Near the Water After Defeating the Ashen Lord

As a final attack, the Ashen Lord will do a geyser attack that will launch the player upwards where you can receive fall damage if you land on the ground. If you're near the water, aim to land there to avoid receiving damage.
