Find the Starting Location Beside the Mysterious Stranger

You can start The Shroudbreaker Tall Tale beside the Mysterious Stranger in the Tavern of any Outpost. Press the Vote for Tall Tale button to start the quest.

Note: This Tall Tale can also be started from your quest table. However, you will still need to go to a Tavern and speak to the Mysterious Stranger in order to unlock the Tall Tale book with clues.

Find the Uncharted Island (N-13)

Map Coordinates	N-13

Go to the Map table of your ship and find the Uncharted Island at The Wilds region between The Crooked Masts and Crook's Hollow. Its coordinates are N-13.

Pick Up the Ship's Log Underwater

Dive down and find the back of the shipwreck. Swim inside the Captain's Quarters to find the Magpie Wing's Ship's Log sitting on a chair in the middle of the room.

Locate the Ancient Chest Using the Tale Book

How to Retrace the Ship's Course
Based on the clues, the Magpie's Wing starts at the South of Thieves' Haven and drops its chest North East of Cutlass Cay.

Use the Magpie Wing's Ship's Log on the Tale Book to figure out the location of the Ancient Chest as it varies per playthrough.

The first entry shows a specific starting location and direction of The Magpie's Wing while the succeeding entries show which direction and landmark that the ship passed by as they attempt to flee from The Burning Blade.

The second to the last entry shows which direction of the island they threw the Ancient Chest overboard. You will need to dive underwater to retreive it.

Possible Locations of the Ancient Chest

The location of the Ancient Chest varies per playthrough. You will need to check the Tale Book and read the Ship's Log to decipher its location.

Pick Up the Totem from the Ancient Chest

Open the Ancient Chest to uncover the totem inside. Note that the totem varies per playthrough and each of them serve as a key to unlock a vault on a specific island. The new pages added to the Tale Book give hints to the location of the vault.

Below are the possible totem types you can obtain and the corresponding vault location.

Find the Ancient Vault

Set sail to the vault location that corresponds to the Totem and find the lock that opens the Ancient Vault.

Equip the Totem and find a rock with a flat top that fits the base of the Totem. A "Place Totem" interaction will appear if you successfuly find the lock to the Ancient Vault.

Solve the Ancient Vault Puzzle

There are two possible puzzle variations that you need to solve to open the vault. These require you to rotate the columns around to match the symbols written on the Tale Book.

Make sure you have your Tale Book equipped before starting the puzzle as activating it causes water to fill the room over time.

Successfully completing the puzzle causes the water to dissapear and leads to the second puzzle to solve.

Find the Three Vault Medallions on the Island

Look at the altar at the center of the room as it will show the location of the Medallion marked with a glowing circle. You will need to head to the location and dig the spot to retrieve the Medallion.

Place the medallion on the altar and look at the image to see it change to another location. You will have to retrieve the second Medallion, place it on the altar, and repeat the process for the third and final one.

After placing all three Medallions, the door that leads to The Shroudbreaker will open. Make sure to grab it fast as this sequence spawns an infinite number of skeletons that chase you off the island.

Return the Shroudbreaker to the Mysterious Stranger

Head back to the nearest Outpost and return the Shroudbreaker to the Mysterious Stranger inside the Tavern. The Tall Tale will be completed once he finishes his monologue about the Skeleton Lord, Captain Briggsy.

What is the Devil's Shroud? Journal Location

The journal is located on the northwestern part of the beach at the Uncharted Island (N-13) where you first find the Magpie Wing's Ship's Log.

An Ancient Clue? Journal Location

This journal is located inside a cave on top of the Ancient Spire Outpost (Q-17).

Comings and Goings Journal Location

The Comings and Goings journal is located at Devil's Ridge (P-19). Find the cannon on the northern side of the island and look for the nearby camp to find the journal inside.

The Shroud Breaker Journal Location

Look for the wooden shack in Thieves' Haven (L-20) to find the journal inside.

The Shores of Gold? Journal Location

The journal is located beside the campfire behind the Gold Hoarders tent on Plunder Outpost (J-18).
